Just go to Adelphi and listen to as many systems as you can, but use one of yr fav CD. U will be able to find yr ideal system. All hi fi shop will always use their best CD to demo that could be deceiving to yr ear. As the saying goes "One man meat is another man poison"

My System is Linn LK1/LK280/Denon CD player/JM Lab Speaker, is also through many listening before deciding on the combination

For music, a lot of it depends on personal choice. ie what type of music you play, jazz, rock etc?

Speakers and amp is the most important component. I would rank amp 1st and speaker 2nd.

Amp - Harmon kardon prices dropped quite significantly but i not sure if they are still good. Yahama is good choice, be it music or movie. Denon is pretty good amp for movie as well.

Speakers - even more personal, as depends on type of music, design etc. there's Jamo, Monitor Audio

I do agree, with you on the personal perference part :) , but I beg to differ on Speakers and Amp are the most important component... :nono:

My reasons are:
1) A Good source is equally if not more important.
2) The Music System is as good as it's weakest link..

I do agree with your general recommendations on the Amps and Speakers maybe ok. A good sound setup is more than just mere equipment, we also need to take into considerations when making our selections, the other aspects such as the size and acoustics of the room, etc and best to base it on it's ability to play all form of music well and as accurate, be it movie soundtrack or just songs/music if you know what I mean :sweatsm: .

3)Speakers will sound a little raw when you first buy them. It takes time for the speakers to run in. I have a 12 year Sony speakers ( Made in Japan ) and it sound so good right now after a couple of years of running in. Now the cone tweeters and midrange sounds just nice!

Actually all this will never end. Same like photography.

My suggestion is calculate the amount of time you spend at home listening to the music. If you are not so particular about the sound but just for listening pleasure sake, heck for $1,500 you can get a very good 6 in 1 systems. Do not need to be a brand called Bose. It's ex, really ex!

Good luck on your purchase!

3) Heh! Heh!... it's called getting used to the sound... or accustomisation.. if there's such a term. Have to agree that Sony do make good speakers, I had an old pair of accurate piston motion type and it sounds great too or I simply got used to it.. anyway who cares I'm the one listening to it.. hee hee..

Agree I've come across some very decent $1.5k to 1.8k 6 in 1 systems and surpisingly good if not better than my current setup... time to change?... perhaps.. :bsmilie:

actually i realised that i have a pair of KEF K120 speakers sitting in the store room, maybe i can utilise those first. Anyone heard of those speakers?

NAD seems like the way to go for now. Will visit adelphi over weekend to check it out.

Kef 120 not too bad, my friend use to have a modified pair and i'm sure it will go pretty well with NAD... their amps are pretty linear..

CD Player, perhaps can get a mid-range DVD-A/SACD player from Marantz....QUOTE]

DVD/SACD player is the way to go man... even the Sony ones there's a difference in terms of music details and depth... go try it out.. of course the recording is best to be in SACD as well

Haiz...I bet many of you guys are not married. Component systems are definitely drool worthly acoustically...but BOSE, B&O and Nakamichi are the only decent systems around with that "Wife Appealing Factor". No approval from wife, cannot buy... :bheart:

? I'm happily married...........---> to my hifi!!

haha...nay just joking...my wife neber comes into my hifi room......haha

I used to (but no longer) run a hifi shop at Adelphi.

If you let me know your budget, music preferences, room condition (eg whether you are able to set up speakers far from back wall) etc, I can help you – or anyone else here – achieve very good sound for relatively little money.

If on tight budget, may need to get some used gear. In general, anything above $3K for complete system can be very good if know how to set up. If really tight budget and don't mind used gear, even less can do.

And I am talking about “high-end” audiophile quality sound, far far better than Bose system.

PM or sms me at 9424 6696. Or email richardseah@pacific.net.sg

Somehow, I see TS Lim's modded CD-63 being thrown into the equation here.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. You can rojak-mix the most expensive components around but it won't guarantee the best sound. OTOH, mixing cheaper components and achieving system synergy would give you great results.
For that kind of price range, I don't know why anyone in the right mind would opt for MC.
I'd take a pair of Kimber Selects KS-1020/ KS-1030 or Aural Symphonics AS-one's anyday.
By far the most neutral sounding interconnects I've heard.

hey laugh,

any update? how did the audition went? is the C370 at your house now? heh.....

Cheers........

yups, its sitting in my room now.

hahah, where got quiet quiet? I post in forum leh..haha.
now makes me wanna go home quick to fiddle with my new toy, but stuck in office. dammit.

The amp is an old amp so I dun think need any run ins right? The bass doesnt sound tight and its not defined enough, the rest of the range is nice and warm. Perhaps i need a speaker stand, it is resting on my table now. Or maybe my room is an acoustic nightmare.

waliao....dude...u put ur spiks on the table!!! no wonder the bass doesn't sound right!! unless ur table is made out of a BIG piece of stone you will need a pair of stands for ur spiks.... check out precision audio at adelphi, they have some decent stand at decent price....

cheers........
