A netbook user would be able to look it up right on the spot :bsmilie:

Sure. If I can find a multi-touch netbook with the same build quality as an iPad (or iPod Touch) and most (if not all) of the apps (or alternative) that I use in my iPod touch, I'll definitely use that instead. :)

i think there exist 1 or 2 model netbook with touch screen function, can't rem cos it was quite some time ago.

Anyway, i'm sure there r alternatives to those apps u commonly use, it juz boils down to ur preference of getting hooked by the big "I". Many people dun use the iPhone or iTouch for surfing the net & they r not missing anything. SO whats the advantage of using the iPhone for web surfing? I can use winmo or android phones as well right? In case u r going to say its the UI, the sad truth was apple didn't create that (talk about accusing adobe of no innovation) They rip it off a small co. & when confronted... Guess what? "Bring out your lawyers" literally in the face. The laws protect the rich & powerful... :bheart:

Pardon my ignorance but what does NYTimes app or CNN do? Read their subscription articles or acts like a shortcut to their website? U can do that on any netbook, laptop, desktop, MID, what is so unique bout that app?

Was having a discussion with a friend the other day, i said everything the iPad can do, a netbook can equally achieved but, everything a netbook can do, the iPad can't fulfill. Eg, if i want to watch a DVD on the netbook, no problems, some models come with built in drives while others need an ext drive, juz pop in the disc & start watching. iPad wud require u to rip the disc & transcode it into apple ver & then import it in. Alternatively, pay for another copy at app store to get it streamed off the Wifi. Why the pain & cost?

Well, dun mind last question: Does the iPhone has apps that let u trade in the stock market? Say the common ones found in S'pore like Kay Hian, DBS Vickers, OCBC Securities, etc? Or do u need to use 3rd party online brokerage? Does the iPhone runs JAVA & Active X for those trading platforms?

2nd line - no internet browser --- what's this? creating another strawman to attack?
everytime i see someone who likes to use "strawman argument" in the wrong context, i know that there is nothing to discuss. :bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

i think someone should make an iStrawman for such people, really. it is the application that will give you details on what a real strawman argument is.

if you wish to make a statement, perhaps you should qualify it, else when others draw it to a larger extent and it doesn't seem to hold up, you can only realise how ridiculous it is, or you can just choose to throw out "strawman argument" rebuttals without showing HOW it is a strawman argument. :)

have a nice day. :)

The name iPad conjours up visions of women's sanitary products. Perhaps the iPad is the IT version of a tampon? Or is that a suppository?

Let's also not forget that because of the ipad, the cost of ebooks are going up, due to Apple's licensing agreements. On Amazon, instead of 10 USD for some new books, they are now 15 USD.

Juz found a use for the iPad that makes it worth buying.... run Win7!!!! HAHAHAHA!!!

Chances are you have a Laptop or PC and a Smartphone already so you need to rationalize how you will use it beyond e-books and browsing. Well if your company has XenDesktop or XenApp you will be happy to know you will be able to use your iPad for real work as well. It turns out the 9.7 inch display on the iPad with a 1024x768 screen resolution works great for a full VDI XenDesktop. Windows applications run unmodified and securely in the data center, and even multiple applications at once. The advancements that were made for the Citrix Receiver for iPhone will carry over to the iPad

Anyway, the cost estimated at Computerworld is about USD$270.50 so selling u at 499 is quite a fat margin for apple.

Google might create one specifically for their Chrome OS. Hopefully, that becomes a good alternative.

Re: netbook vs. iPad -- first thing that comes to mind is portability. I can never imagine opening up a netbook during my daily commute to/from work in a bus/mrt where I am mostly standing up. My netbook (asus aod250) with WinXP does not like being woken up from sleep. I would rather boot it up which does take a while. Even then, I can't comfortably use a netbook while sitting down without a mouse - that trackpad is just too small. Impossible when standing up. Just count the number of people using a netbook on the train. Compare that to number of people using their iPhones, iPod Touch, Blackberry, other smart phones watching movies, browsing the internet, playing games - on a moving train. I also started noticing some sony readers and amazon kindle users on trains now. So it is not impossible to see iPads being used that way too. The main difference is the start up time. These hand held mobile devices are always on, takes seconds to wake them up. It can be used anywhere - you are not required to find a horizontal plane to put it on. I even find people using those devices in queues. Can you do that on netbooks?

Second thing that comes to mind is usability. Personally, I get a better browsing experience on the 3" screen of my iPod touch compared to the 10" screen of my netbook. I can zoom in quickly on the section that I want to read, scroll by flicking my finger, and tap on the links quickly to navigate. The 10" screen and 800x600 odd pixels available on most netbooks is still not enough to view pages from sites that are usually designed for 1024x768 screens. There are no quick and easy zoom in-out functionality in firefox or chrome or IE - something that comes built-in in MobileSafari.

P.S. - no java nor activex on the iPhone, iPod touch. I don't expect it to be on the iPad.

Google wud probably use the android platform, now that they have added the multi touch feature :)

Thx for your insight, i see where u r getting, its about the form factor than ability. But i'm a little skeptical here comparing phones with the tablet. The phone is very small, u can grip it in ur palm & navigate & even sms with the thumb, & u can easily put it inside the pants pocket or take out from it. The ease & convenience is there. As for the tablet u need to hold with one hand & navigate with the other. So while standing in the train, esp crowded ones, is that really a good idea? Guess that's up to individual to decide, for me, i'd rather watch a movie, or surf the net in a more comfy place.

Flash is so buggy that Mozilla have resorted to separating it from most of the browser (Firefox, SeaMonkey) and so have Google done with Chrome. Adobe's Flash development environment doesn't seem incredibly buggy--at least, when compared to the plug-in/player and Acrobat/Acrobat Reader.

First time I hear about this. ****. After so many years then I realize my Facebook games could crash on me any time. Suddenly I'm worried.

No surprise. iPod was a copy. mp3 players have been around for ages before Apple realized that maybe they could make money out of this.

Yep. With the recent attack from Job "Adobe is lazy, Blu-ray is a mess, Google tries to kill iPhone. Heck! Apple didn't even go into the search bizz" He made it sound like apple product is the most supreme & sovereign of them all. Its GOD

1) iPhone OS navi was nipped from someone else... Talking about lazy & innovation

2) iPhone can't even do what basic phones do in its 1st gen... Talk about mess. Even with the current 3rd gen, whatever happen to the bluetooth function? Only restricted to hands-free set? OMG!!

3) Look at the iPod & iPhone products, who is trying to kill who? Not like apple invented the MP3 player & the mobile phone. Let's not even go into the higher end product market with their FCP suite & a new audio suite that's coming...

But his approach of selling apple never fails to amaze me, he preaches it like a religion & the evangelists juz bite w/o questioning & opening their eyes to the bugs & problems. Religion is the next easiest way to make a million dollars... & so that's what they say

Before i end this post, here's a little piece of update regarding flash:

Adobe has long maintained that it is ready to implement Flash on Apple products and is reiterating that it simply has not received the cooperation from Apple that it needs to bring Flash to devices like the iPhone. Lynch wrote, "We are ready to enable Flash in the browser on these [Apple] devices if and when Apple chooses to allow that for its users, but to date we have not had the required cooperation from Apple to make this happen."

iPad is definitely a clone. That black front plate, shiny back plate, multitouch screen, single home button in the front, the earphone jack, even the power/data connector and logo at the back has been copied!

What's more, they copied it from an even older device! Those lazy guys Apple just copied the iPad from the iPhone and iPod Touch! ;p

Come on guys, that's absurd. The cloners (P88 manufacturer) are now complaining that they are the original when it is clear that they just copied the design from the iPhone/iPod Touch. They did not even do it that well - 1.5 hr battery life? :thumbsd:

got fine examples here.

The power of the internet, in the palm of your hands!;)

But honestly speaking, after watching the keynote speech and demo, there are some areas which the iPad would excel:
1) 10 hour battery life / 1 month standby time: I can use this as a picture frame or put it in the car to entertain my passengers

2) iBook: Its eye candy (page flip animation, etc) but to a non-tech, it will be intuitive

3) Appstore: already a lot of apps for iPhone

4) Showing pictures

What I don't like is the lack of a camera or USB to connect external devices. Will probably check out version 2.

the iPad shouldn't really be compared to a conventional netbook... the physical keyboard on the one hand provides a great advantage in terms of usability, and on the other hand hinders its portability...

the iPad's real direct competitors should be tablet PCs and tablet netbooks... if people don't prefer the form factor of the conventional netbook or laptop, then those should be what they should be looking at...

as for eBook readers, on the one hand, the iPad is certainly more versatile than current eBook readers in that you can run more programs and do more stuff on it, on the other hand, the screen is probably gonna be more straining to the eyes, more difficult to read in bright sunlight, and the battery life is much less...

HP is coming out with a slate pc later this year.
Runs win7 and seems to have usb. No need to settle for the fruit machine anymore.

There have been Windows-based tablet PCs for almost a decade now.
