........ and Just saw the video of the 135 f2 APO Sonnar on Facebook!

PI_0081-2012_High-end_SLR_lens-622x414.jpg

OMG! A 82mm front element 55/1.4 and an almost 1kg 135/2 APO. There are 2 important things to do this year.

1) Head to the gym and lift heavier dumb-bells
2) When not in gym, work hard and make more $

Jokes aside. Looking at the finishing of the 55/1.4, this could be a Sony AF lens. Wait it is ZF.2. Hmmm...are we seeing Zeiss AF prime? Also it is a Distagon like the 35/1.4 and not a Planar. Could it be turning on the ultra delicious creamy bokeh? I also find the Sonnar 135/2 APO stepping inside the Planar 100/2 territory with its 1:4 magnification, 260 degree precise focusing throw and APO.

Also interested to see what Canon comes up with in their EF 35/1.4 II, 50/1.4 II and 135/2 II. This could end up to be an interesting year.

And with all the Zeiss prime lenses almost complete except for a 350-400mm, we may also be seeing Zeiss zooms in 2013.

Also Zeiss promised at least one fast ZM lens in 2013!

Sony beat the rest to it. Well done! Oh by the way, it is a Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35/2 lens on that camera. I am getting all confuse with the Distagons and Sonnars nowadays but it is nevertheless great news!

Sonnar I guess because allow more space between sensor and last lens element.

55/1.4 Distagon probably using a medium formula for 35mm, where 55 in medium format is wide angle. Otherwise the lens would not be so huge with a 82mm filter thread!

The previous widest Sonnar is 50/1.5 on RF and the longest Distagon is 45mm on M645. So having a Sonnar 35/2 and Distagon 55/1.4 is interesting. Will be interesting to compare them to Distagon 35/2 and Planar ZA 50/1.4, another new lens. A lot of hot releases with no prior rumours. What's next?

The calling of Sony's AF Zeiss is getting stronger. If they do a Planar 85/1.4 similiar to Contax N's, I will jump ship....

The previous widest Sonnar is 40/2.8 on Rollei 35. Longest medium format distagon is 80/4 on Rollei sl66.

Well, these "Sonnars" aren't real Sonnar designs, and neither will this be. The Sony/CZ Sonnar 135/1.8 and 24/2, for example, have nothing to do with the classic Sonnar design, and this has been so for quite a long time. For example, the Contax G 90/2.8 was marketed as a "Sonnar" but is really a very classic Ernostar (cemented doublet at rear). So the "Sonnar" designation basically nowadays seems to mean "fast, expensive quality lens". Of course one can argue about what is a "classic Sonnar", and if it is desirable when coatings are better and exotic glass and aspherics have made completely new designs possible.

On a somewhat tangential, but topical, note I have succeeded in putting a 5/4 "Sonnar" on my NEX-5:
Magnus Wedberg, photography and design. Contax T stripped down for NEX
Alas, no cemented triplets there, either. ;)

My bad. I am not familiar with Rollei and didn't realised they are so forward thinking.

This is an awesome mod. You must have spent lots of time designing, fabricating and calibrating the lens.

Actually I think the Nikon L35AF wins in this regard; as far as I have been able to research, both the 40mm Rollei and "my" 38mm Zeiss uses the same design, but the Nikon is 35mm. That might be the cheapest way to get a lens with this "Sonnar" design, but of course, it won't be marked "Zeiss".

Thank you! Well, thankfully for me, Kyocera/Zeiss did all the design work, I only had to disassemble and then reassemble the important part! ;) heh heh.

ManWearPants you are right about the money part.
heard it's gonna be EXPENSIVE.
nonetheless i'm sure it gonna be good for them to ask for that kinda price

I am thinking of moving to a FF DSLR and playing with Zeiss lenses.

Anyone can share any experience regarding ease of MF with Nikon (eg. D600/D800) and Canon (eg. 6D/5D3).
