There are two models on the link : Alta Pro Carbon Fiber Tripod and Alta Pro Aluminum Alloy Tripods. Both looks good. The $230 is for Alta Pro Carbon Fiber Tripod?

$230 confirm is for Alumiunium

Agree on Benro, the price range of ~160 can give you a tripod able to support about 4 kg. However what telephot prime you are looking into? As someone said before, if 200 or 300mm prime, is going to be a bit weight, + a 50D, I think better get a tripod can support 5 kg. My own experience, I always get a tripod can support about one time more weight then my set up.

ok damm.. today went to try 350ex and found that it was not very stable. would have to move to 500ex for something sturdier. I also noted that the 500dx is out of stock at most places. so i decided to look at 400dx. studier and more well built than the 500ex, i feel, though it doesnt have a ballhead but a panhead instead. will get this tomorrow from alan photo @ sls for 185 since they have to bring it over from their warehouse first. surprisingly, the 1st floor con money shop is where i found the lowest price for a tripod lol

I took the plunge and went with the Slik 330DX today. It's long, bulky, feels heavier than expected and the 3-way pan-head is a little inconvenient - but hey, it's quite affordable and, going by reviews, reliable. Hope I enjoy it in the days ahead! :bsmilie:

lol benro is light and cheap. dunno whether sturdy not. 1.3kgs.. supposed to tahan 5kgs

TS, U may want to consider this Vanguard tripod? it won TIPA 2009 best accessory. reasonable price at ard $230 with ballhead if I am not wrong.

Wow, I didn't know that Vanguard makes Tripods. Thanks for the info! I was looking at their ball heads and they look pretty impressive with SBH 300 with a max load capacity of 70 lbs. Now, I should start googling for some reviews ;)

Monfrotto's are really good from the reviews I've read on them though I've never used one myself yet. If you want a tripod that's going to last a while, you may not wanna go to cheap, than as you know it can become a reliability and breakage issue.

Currently I am using 190XproB, I may wanna change to Vanguard tripod soon. haha...

I love the quick deploy for macro shooting of ALta Pro 263AT.

Just wanna share a point that I have taken into consideration when looking for a tripod.

As I wanna use it for travel and light enough for long walk, the tripod dead weight is one thing that I have to consider.

The weight is very subjective. However, I did experience finding the weight to be acceptable while testing at the shop. But once bought and during my first excursion with the new tripod, I said damn and feeling like getting a trolley for it. Particularly the weight is not killing me but I just don't like the idea have to lug something that distracted my attention to look for a good subject while walking.

That's my 2 cents.

have picked up the slik 400dx at alan photo sls for 185. at first impression it seems to be quite a solid tripod for the price. let's see how it goes. field test in 12 hours!

Going to try the Manfrotto 190XProB and Vanguard 263AT today.

Sorry, this might be OT a bit.

Anyone have any ideas where I can find a Gorillapod? I've seen images of it being able to hold a 70200/2.8IS
