What that noise after we power down E-510??

Guys I try out E-510 a few hours ago. I notice that when I power off the camera. Is has a sound? Is that SSWF working or what?

I think it is the IS mechanisms being reset.
The E-510 body will vibrate even when there is no lens attached.
My E-330 has no such vibrations of that magnitude.

So is the IS or SSWF noisy. Is very strong the sound. Can hear in room without noisy. I dun think SSWF shake so strong!

Bought the package at HN funan. $1499, comes with dry box, bag, tripod(changed it for a filter). They do have the basic package at $1299 with 2 pieces of 2GB CF cards. ;)

This price for single or dual lens combo?

i don't think the IS is always 'on'. with the Liveview on, pressing and holding the IS button lets you see the IS in action on screen. the IS also vibrates the camera quite a bit with some humming when doing so.

if the IS is always 'on', shouldn't we hear the humming or the vibration all the time? i have my IS on in mode 1 all the time, i think it only comes in when you press the shutter button. like panasonic's Mega OIS mode 2.

Some examples of IS at work at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple today...

More pics of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple as seen through the E-510 can be found in this post.

I really like the colours from the E-510... better than what I actually expected. :)

With pictures like those (the Buddha Relic Temple interior), who needs a tripod anymore? :dunno:

Malaysia price is better,at RM2900(Single kit i think).

guys,

SSWF activates only during powerup and there's no audible noise.

The noise during power down is only when we turn IS on. Turn IS off before switching the cam off, there'll be no noise.

It's a mechanism to 'park' or recalibrate the IS I suppose.

Those were taken at 7mm, so it's not really pushing it.

It does not mean that just because a ultra-wide is used, there is no need for IS. In my experience eg. like shooting in caves, any shots at that kind of shutter speeds are more suspectible to handshakes and affects the hit rate accordingly even if at 7mm. I would always use a tripod in such cases.

But perhaps these would be more persuasive....

Both taken with the Sigma 105mm EX.

Shucks, I am scheduled to go to KL next weekend and I could have saved about S$60 buying from that source you quoted RM2900 for the single-kit-lens E-510 box.

Well, there's always that hassle of bringing back the entire boxed set -not sure if it would arouse the S'pore customs enough to try to tax you?

I'm greedy... :bsmilie:

I'm looking for the IS to deal with shutter speeds impossible for me to handhold.

Better if it can replace the monopod (that's about another stop of stability, up to 1/2s) but the mechanism must be robust enough to take a hard knock. ;p

If they see it (nicely packed in box and all), then it's GST for you... :bsmilie:

A little disclaimer here: the 510 is a great cam; don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to shoot it down or anything like that. I'm just playing the devil here.

But a genuine concern here is the robustness of the IS in relation to impact.

Do you think that an in-lens IS would be less susceptible to a hard knock? Even the lens might not survive a hard knock I would think.

Yah....I was thinking if the E510 can take anything for slower shutter speed - 1/2s & below :o ..??Any test & sample photo?

Hmm, what I said about robustness applies to in-lens IS as well; well any IS mechanism for that matter.

That would be too greedy !
Only people with great breathing and hand-holding techniques and probably other physiological attributes like low pulse rate and ability to remain extremely calm under stress etc, might be able to achieve that kind of speeds with IS. Which is to say that even if somebody did post samples that showed that it could be done, it just meant that it could be done by him and not necessarily by any 'Tom, Dick & Harry' photographer like most of us. ;)

Then IS is out for you, I suppose. This is despite the fact that IS has been around for many, many years and is a tried and tested technology. Ultimately, it is our own responsibility to be careful with our equipment, you know. ;)

Yes of course. But photojournalists has no control of the environment we work in, and therefore the hardiness of our gear and the reliability of the gear are very important to us. Well, I guess until a newer technology is made available (Panasonic Toughbook comes to mind), I guess I will have to rely on monopods and less coffee... LOL.

drakon09, you intend to do some serious drop tests with the E-510 ah?

For me... (hugs my Digital OM-10, aka E-410). LOL...
