Yes, HN gives 2 x 2GB CF (Normal Kingston) on the spot when I got my E510.
Save the trouble to redeem from Olympus.
Did they stamp 'Redeem' onto your receipt? If not, maybe you can try your luck to see if you can get another card from the Olympus Studio as they expect buyers to collect the second card from them. ;)

Thanks, for the advise tomcat.
Will try my luck this weekend.

I am thinking of getting the older 40-150mm f3.5-4.5 with the e510 kit instead of the new ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 because it is cheaper and brighter.
Please advise this newbie
Thanks for your time

I say yes because old version is better.

You should get at least 1 pc of the 2GB card from Olympus (claim from the service centre).

But... the 2GB CF cards that were given to me are the slow speed type. At least they are Kingstons.
To make full use of the E-510's unlimited number of HQ JPEG sequential shooting (or 30+ SHQ JPEG without slowdown) you'll need a 120x or 133x speed CF card.

The standard (ie. slow) CF cards from Kingston is actually pretty fast :) I suspect these are 'leftovers' from the same production line as the 40-50x 'Elite Pro'. Can't say the same for other brands, when they indicate 'slow' they mean it.

Are you intending to go for a brighter telephoto?

Looks like the 510 is a major hit around the world!

Kudos to the Oly guys of doing such a great job till now; all they need to do now is to deliver a REAL smackdown pro cam!

So dangerous & scary... se-ka-li the person at the Olympus showroom knows tat H.N gives 2 cards straight away without chopping 'redeem'... & then tells you in the face & dun give you... kind of ma-lu right? :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

But then if it works, lie a bit... can get an extra CF card leh... :sweatsm:

Ignorance is bliss... just say it slipped your mind that HN gave you two.

You were too excited with your new 510 to notice! :bsmilie:

You could always bull to try your luck: "But the HN guy promised me THREE 2GB CF cards!" :bsmilie:

OK... at any rate the standard Kingston CFs I got can't sustain more than 10 HQ JPEG or 10 SHQ JPEG shots (probably the limit of the E-510's buffer memory) continuously without the burst rate slowing down drastically. But I don't think that will affect me much as I rarely shoot off more than 5 continuous frames at one sitting.

Are you intending to go for a brighter telephoto?

Coming from a Canon G2 to my first DSLR, I intend to start with the new 14-42 kit lens and a cheap tele ie 40-150 (old f3.5-4.5 or new 4.0-5.6?). Don't have the budget for 50-200 or brighter lenses.

Well, the old 40-150mm is much cheaper now than the new one.

The difference is that the old 40-150mm is almost twice the size of the new one, but is one stop brighter. The old one also has a front element that rotates during focusing; the new one doesn't (i.e. you can use polarizers on the new one).

Another thing to note is that there will be a longer telephoto lens (70-300mm f4-5.6) in the normal range to be released later this year.

Actually we can use polariser on the older one also. It's just that the polariser should be adjusted after the lens has been pre-focussed. Any subsequent focussing changes if not too drastic should not affect the polariser very much.

The old 40-150mm when wide open is somewhat soft. To get good sharpness, you'll need to step it down one stop at least. Not sure about the new 40-150mm ED version (is it sharp when wide open)? Well, at least you have 2/3rds of a stop of useful shutter speed to use with the old one for when you do need it.

On another note, I spotted the E-510 dual lens kit at one Fotokem franchise store in KL this weekend. Selling for RM3699 best price (listed RM3799 but bargained down from that). Asked about body-only kit and was quoted RM2599 (or was it RM2699..?) but the store attendant had no idea when body-only stocks will be in.

Hi everyone, newbies here and I've zero knowledge about SLR camera but very interested to get myself e510.Is it advisable for newbies like me to own a slr camera or should I start off with a compact first? Sound sophisticated when you guys mentioning about the the ev and number of stops......confused:dunno:

Thanks for contributing your first post to the FourThirds forums. Hehe. If you are willing to learn, and is very interested in photography, go with the DSLRs. Or else, get a compact or maybe a prosumer first and see if you would like to invest in the DSLRs. :D

welcome to the four-thirds section, i'm new here too. you can check out the newbies corner where there is much discussion on considerations for newbies for their 1st digital camera.

http://forums.clubsnap.org/forumdisplay.php?f=8

this section discusses the four-thirds (4/3) DSLR system specifically, so you should widen your net while looking for a camera system that suits your needs.

investing in a DSLR system doesn't end at the camera purchase, it will be a long term investment in lenses, flashes and other upgrades for the particular brand or standard that you intially invested in. take time to read up the forums here and other media to understand this hobby or profession.

compact cameras or prosumers will have an easier learning curve as well as being cheaper to start with and/or to give up photography as a hobby.

since you're in the 4/3 forum, you should also check out the 4/3 website to understand the spirit behind the creation of this open standard for DSLR photography.

http://www.four-thirds.org/en/index.html

4/3 is a great system and it works for me. hope you find something that suits you

my experience with the old 40-150 is different. Mine is pretty sharp when wide open IF the focus is spot on. I tried using manual focus on the E330, the pics are sharper than what I get if I use the AF.
