I think it is more of ... be considerate and reasonable. We don't have to 'beg' for their service, likewise ... the salesperson is not obliged to roll out the red carpet treatment for every person that strolls into the shop.

Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion of each merchant. But as one forum member said, don't let one experience determine your future judgement.

Hey, I believe if you are a nice customer, and the salesperson still bo-chap, then just too bad for him/her cos there goes their potential commission/sales. There is more than one shop right? But if they are sole agent then too bad lor ....

The fact is, in Singapore, as a potential customer, no salesman is going to go out of his way to make you feel welcome & start to chat you up. You have to do it first. Only rarely do we encounter a salesperson who does this. Even if he or she does, as a local here, we would normally feel weird about such an approach. It just doesn't seem natural! Of course, to person from the U.S., Aussie or whatever, this is the standard. This is sad & unfortunate, but that's how it is here.

I know the common tactic of a customer walking into a shop, looking around, see if got chinese salesman, then go to him and strike up a converstion in hokkien, basically trying to be 'buddy' with him. Especially when it comes to the bargaining. The customer will try to get a lower price by speaking in dialect instead. Ever notice this?:bsmilie:
