AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G on sale from today 16 Feb 2012

For those working near Fujixerox building can go to the Nikon show room to try all the 3 version of the 85mm lenses....

Than one need to stand far from the object to take the snap, would it be very limited in it usage? I ask this as I got a 50 mm 1.8 g which I find ver limited in the view finder. Thus with 85mm I can't figure out in what sense it to be use.

hi, newbie here. with 85mm, fitted onto d7000, it will x 1.5 = 127.5mm?

No a 85mm focal lenght; is always a 85mm be it on crop or ff. Its more correct to say, it give an ~(85x1.5) FOV!.

in practical use for portrait when using a d90, which is a more recommended lens, 1.8D or 1.8G?

Whether you are on a D90, D300 or D3s, both lenses are practical. It's just how much CA tolerance you can stand for each of these lenses. Lots of pros and cons has been discussed above and all over the net. Do a quick search and you should be able to find them. If you are still in doubt, search "froknowsphoto 85mm F/1.8G" in google.

85 x 2.7 = 230mm 1.8 .... hmmm...

ic .. btw did u manage to compare with the 85 AFS 1.4?

cos the AFD 50 f1.8 was faster than then 50 AFS f1.4

Agree on this. Was at NSC yesterday, tested these 2 lens together. The focusing for 85 f1.8D was very fast, the subject just pop into focus almost instantaneously whereas the 1.4G was very slightly & perceptably slower. The wider aperture dont seem to help to make focusing in low light better. I think the contrast & shape of the subject is more important for fast & accurate focusing. Didnt compare the 1.8D vs G though.

The lesser sharpness and CA from the D version is good reasons to turn to the G lens. These two are the most contrasting differences. Although I only comparing the D version using online pictures at 1.8 while using my G version at 1.8

Both are suitable but 1.8G is better choice and len. Also can use for future FF body... Good lens usually can last for years...

This is my test using D5100 @ ISO 100 f16 (I mostly take product shoot only)

Scaled @ 25% after sharpening and levels adjust only

85mm f3.5G DX MICRO
85mmf35GDXPost.jpg

The image look "larger" on a 85mm DX compared to the FX because this lens is 1:1 magnification

@ 100% zoom pixel comparison - no post processing done and using RAW NEF files

Conclusion - Sharp lens even at min aperture f16. However if already owned a 85mm 3.5G DX and using DX camera, can skip unless you want 2 stop lower shooting @ f1.8. Also this lens don't have VR

Succumbed to the BBB virus. Bought it today at Alan Photo SLS. Beautiful lens!

Now to off-load my faithful AF 85mm f/1.8.

Bro if ok with you, can you pm me how much you bought it at Alan Photo SLS? Planning to buy also, considering the 1.4G also due to bokeh b

But still undecided due to price differenceü

The 1.4G is out of the question for me. I believe the 1.8G has enough of good bokeh for me, not splurghing anymore, got to pay for Uni fees.

Maybe I will take some time to test the 1.8 vs the 1.8G before selling. Or maybe I should keep the good old faithful 1.8 for memory sake.

Unless you really need the thin DOF, the 1.8G should be sufficient. Sharpness is Mo Da Teng ^^
Though I still find the bokeh of Sigma 85mm F/1.4 more pleasing.

Thanks for the pm. I agree the bokeh is good enough and i think is sufficient for what my needs are..ü im not getting paid however sometimes cant keep wondering what difference the 1.4g would give me..ü anyway need to be realistic and practicalü
