AF-S 85mm F/1.4G N

tried this at nikon showroom jus now. drool-worthy

How about the AF speed? Is it on par compared to the older version?

tried it A/B side by side with 85 1.4D, same setting.
frankly not too impressed with the new lens when you can get the old AF-D for about 1.3k v good cond 2nd hand now.
the center is only a thin hair sharper. The corner does look better though, but i do notice there's a bit more 'purple fringing' too in some part of the pic?
contrast at the sides do seem better, but how often do you put your subject right at the corners?

for me it's hard to justify 2.2 2.3k price of the new lens esp if you already have the old one.
Not unless you really use 85 1.4 all the time and want to squeeze every bit of performance out of it
The old 85 1.4D is already a legendary lens in Nikon's line up for a reason
ps. i also don't really like the warmer balance on the new lens. I prefer slightly more neutral balance, but this is a small matter and easily fixed in Raw/PS
verdict: saving the money for other lens like 35 1.4 instead :D

yeah man
frankly I am surprised when so many are dumping their old 85 1.4D in the B/S in favor of this new lens. The loss from buy/sell for that little gain IMHO is just .. ouch

well this is the kind of ppl that helps the economy move. Not to mention, others can now pick up the 85 at a more affordable price.

hmm...i don't own the 85AFD.
so what is better for me if i'm getting the 85 for the first time?
get the old? or the new?

The older AFD renders color differently... For portrait... The older lens have a kind of magical look while the newer news a more 3d feel.

if you want to save $, AFD. for everything else, there is always AFS...

What is magical look and what is 3d feel ?

Is the AF-S lens 'AF' speed on par with the older lens?

I am thinking of getting 85mm f1.4D, but um, I like taking wide angle pic using telephoto, meaning the object will be placed at long distance. Using 85mm f1.4D, any problems focusing at long distance?

Bokeh will not be that good if shooting at longer distance.

didnt i mentioned the AFS is slower.. how much slower u need to move yr bum to nikon showroom to see for yrself.. There is another photographer who did the same test on his own D700 that day also concluded the AFS is slower..but very quiet more heavy and bigger to grip....

Anyone bought this lens from HK recently? Care to share where to get it and how much? Thanks ;)

very nice review. i guess it's more for photographers who don't have the old ver.

actually, if you have read his review closely, there are some differences like better contrast and warmer tones bet the AFS and AFD. whether are these enough reasons to break the bank for the new lens, it is up to the person.

his comments abt the AF speed are worth taking note of. personally, even though i am sure this lens will probably kick a lot of a55, as a hobbyist, i think it is a good time to get the AFD, cos the differences are not worth breaking the bank.
