AF-S 85mm F/1.4G N

Im happy with my AFD version... 5/10 yrs down the road... if i need to replace it and AFD is still available, i will still buy AFD version...

dunno what you mean by nervous.

It is the green/magenta fringe which you see at out of focus area when there is a bright/dark transition.

It is VERY obvious and can be seen even on web sized pics....

Chromatic Aberration?

it is a specific kind of CA.

photozone calls it Bokeh Fringing / Longitudinal Chromatic Aberrations (LoCA)

Nice read

Didnt know about LoCA until I saw your link. But this is really not something that would bother a lot of ppl unless they are pixel peeping.

this was the reason i didnt get the AF-D version. i had the opportunity to test it from a very nice dude, and the very first shot i took, saw really really nasty LoCA, and also typical CA, which appeared at a point from white to black transition. (think a clothing price tag, resting on a black top)

hopefully the AF-S version doesnt have the same problem. If it doesnt, its gonna be on my "to buy" list.

Looks like this is not only happened with AFD 85mm f/1.4, but also with other AFD lenses. I had owned AFD 85mm f/1.4 and sold it already. Previously I rented AFD 50mm f/1.4 and AFD 135 f/2 also suffered from LoCA, which appeared in the transition from bright to dark.

If you drop 1 f-stops down, LoCA will disappear. But no point right? Better purchasing the f/1.8 version, it's cheaper.

It's good that Nikon have updated their lens with AFS 50mm f/1.4G. Hopefully AFS 85mm f/1.4G also get improvement. For this reason, I don't do pre-order before knowing the quality of the new lens.

;)

What is "CA" you guys talking about?
Is AFS 50mm F1.8 a good lens for portraits?

hmm....for those who think CA is the main issue with the old lens, i think they'd be disappointed with the new one.

Based on the photo alone, the newer version seems to have slightly, only very slightly, better bokeh :dunno:

this japanese guy compares both new and old 85 1.4 wide open.. draw your own conclusion :)

photos result looks identical
only the lens diffrence is the SWM & Nano & of course hi $

from what I can see, the saturation is increased (Nano coating , I believe as I have compared 16-35 and 17-35 and my 16-35 has more saturated color as well), and the corner is sharper.
But the centre is still similar. Worth the 1k more? :)

That is the ultimate question.

Is the IQ improvement worth that 1K extra. Considering mine cost about 1.2K when I got it, paying twice the price for diminished returns is just being stupid.

yea.. for ppl who paid around that price for 85 1.4,
it's crazy to spend on the new one.
Somemore, the old AFD lens is built like a tank. The new one, probably slightly less so. Even has motor inside.. more chance of failure..
well oh well...

i had the 50 f/1.4 D before, but i didnt see that problem. probably i wasnt shooting it at areas with extreme black/white transitions. my first test with the 85 f/1.4 was shot wide open (otherwise, no point buying it, like you said), and the price tag of the clothes rack i was aiming at, gave me that horrid CA. just one shot and i was convinced not to get that. saved me quite a bit of $$ actually.

i am honestly hoping the newer version will fix that problem, or at least reduce it to a minimal. if it does completely fix the problem, i will pay that additional 1k on top of the 85 AF-D, to get it.

I think because this AF-D 85mm f/1.4 is an old lens. Which during that time was designed for film camera that can also work Nikon digital system.

This AF-S lens is specially designed for digital system.
I hope Nikon has solved this problem.

The bokeh is very smooth.
