AF-S 24-70 stiff zoom ring

From 24-50 is OK, but from 50-70 or 70-50 it will have some vibration and noise. The lens is still useable now but would like to repair it. Compare mine with my friends 24-70, my zoom ring is definitely stiffer. I normally transportation the lens with the Hood reverse.

As time goes by the stiff will get worst and eventually u'll have a NIKON AF 24-50 2.8G... :bsmilie:

Nikon Japan ..... not doing anything about this stiffing problem ???
Afterall this is an expensive lens.

If its still not clear enough for some.... NSC will not touch your old lens. They will do a barrel replacement and the lens you get back has a new serial number..... get it? :bsmilie::bsmilie:

and its free if your lens is still under warranty.

Youtube has a video on how to fix this zoom ring problem. Search for Nikon 24 70 2.8 zoom ring repair fix. Personally i wont try something like this cause it involves opening up the lens and greasing the interior.

It doesn't fix it permanently. It just makes it better temporarily.

Iirc the permanent solution involves changing the whole lens barrel.

Quite a shame that this can happen to a high-end lens.

Btw, the video says that the stiffness disappear when the lens is held upside down. I wonder why. If the barrel is out of shape due to weight/impact, shouldnt the problem persist when the lens is upside down?

The stiff part is when the lens is pushing to extend the front group element (which is heavy), similar to other lenses but may not be as obvious. When the lens is upside down, gravity helps to extend the front element.

Just curious, if they replace a 'new barrel' do you guys got back the old spoil barrel?

I'm wondering what they do to the spoil one..

They "repaired" it for you, now why would you think you'd get an "additional" barrel?... :what:

Tell you what, work for NSC and lets us know what they do in there, okay? ;)

I also happens to the Canon 24-70 too, if you are interested to know..

but the repair cost for canon is much lower if I am not wrong.

Well the Canon 24-70 is also cheaper.

Both lenses (and both brands) have their own pros and cons. We all know them but we just pretend we don't know :bsmilie: So no need to debate ;)

Camera service centers will not give you the faulty part.
I guess it's their way of preventing 3rd party repair from recycling the parts  :bsmilie:
They will try to destroy these parts further before throwing into the garbage bin.

Hey guys, i sent my 24-70 to NSC for the stiff zoom problem, after changing the barrel will the problem still surface again? thanks and cheers!!

IF you are not careful, yes it might resurface again.
