A99

True, I never tried the 50/1.4 on the A99... Particularly screw drive lenses because they aren't the fastest ones and I like to know how they perform in AF-D mode. I meant the newly supported lenses like the 100/2.8.

Some people claim the startup time got reduced.

For what i understand and observed, the AF-D mode need to acquire the focus based on AF point of Phase detection on the AF module, then assisted AF points from the Sensor around those AF points come into play. I have SAL50F14 and i don't find it much faster on AF-D compared to AF-C or AF-S. I didn't tried it on moving objects though.

I have a Tamron 90/f2.8 and it use the same lens id as Sony 100/f2.8 hence AF-D can be enabled and I can see the assisted AF points came into play. So seems good:)

As for startup seems slightly reduced but not that significant.

It's pretty cool for tracking patterns in AF-D Spot mode. You lock on with the center AF point and the camera tracks the pattern over the whole AF area with the 102 secondary points. Though, I only used it with SSM and SAM lenses so far.

I cannot get the secondary AF points activated when using AF-D Spot mode. What subject did you try on?

On various stuff on my office desk, books, keyboard, documents, pens and so on. :) I primarily tried it at minimum focus distance. It doesn't work for you with any of your lenses or just the Tamron 90/2.8? It seems to work with the Sony 100/2.8, at least according to the α99 flickr group. ;)

Bro Ageha, you finally got the A99?

:bsmilie:

you should have gotten the RX1 instead.

Not yet, still playing with my colleague's A99. She's still trying to convince me to get one, too. Did you buy the RX1?

I tried on 70200G. Just tried Tamron 90/2.8. Didn't work on spot mode. I used wide mode and tried macro on my keyboard and moving myself to simulate motion. I did seem that the secondary AF points got activated without the primary AF points!

Well, so in your case you can't acquire initial lock-on with the primary center AF point?

Nope. I did acquire initial lock-on with the primary centre AF point when on AF-D spot mode.

Then it's all good. :) Your post sounded like the behavior would be different from what's described in the manual. ;)

hi guys, is it silly to upgrade from a65 + SAL35f18 (lightweight and small) to a99 + SAL50f14 (lightweight and small as well)? will there be significant improvements in AF speed and sharpness?

I find myself using f2.8 most of the time, coz f1.8 would give too shallow DOF and some parts of the face / body will be blur.

Don't think the 50/1.4 is blazing fast. If you want faster AF you need to look for a SSM lens.

Silly or not. I cant say. Its up to you.

In any case. A99 > A65 in terms of performance (AF and sharpness as you mentioned) (correct me if im wrong).

So. If you have the money and dont mind. Just do it lo.:)

what's the cheapest SSM Full frame lens? So AF speed depends on the lens + the body?

Yeah, that sums it up pretty well. That's the problem with Sony, there are no cheap SSM lenses.

The sigma 50f1.4 Hsm works well and they hv a upcoming 35f1.4. Tat or their 2470 Hsm.

Sony is coming up with zeiss 50f1.4 ssm this yr based on SAR. Think Sony current ff ssm is at $3k region

Yeah, the new 50/1.4 price amazed me. :)
