A900

IF the A900 was built to run on AA batteries, it would require an incredible number of AA batteries... just imagine the size of the verticle grip then. :bsmilie:

it would be good if Sony's VG can support AA batteries.

canon does that.. my cousin's 40D VG can support AAs.. pretty handy..

Bro geno, I know there old Minolta ones out there, and Sony replicates some of the Minolta ones, but that's just about it. And I only buy NEW ones.

:(

sometimes... new ones arent that good.. im sure there are some classic vintage lens out there which can never be replicated.. legends in their own right.

So besides the VG, your cousin also has to bring the tray for the AA batteries?

Not a big problem when you have to carry AAs for the flash gun as well... the tray is very light but it can be a real life saver...

Get your hands on a good Minolta 28-70G and i will hear you talking day and night about this lens. Colorwise unbeatable, bokeh, beyond tomorrow ...

WAAAAHHHHH....................................................

I test drove the A900 in Taipei Sonystyle Taipei 101.... it's fantastic lar... so light (lighter than my 7D + grip + 2 batteries + 17-35mm lens). The A900 had the 24-70mm on... and the AF was awesome - relative to my 7D... the screen was mind-boggling... totally sold on it... except the file size... I need to take a good look at the JPEG file sizes cos I shot 3 frames on my own CF card...

Anyway prices are the same as in S'pore... all prices same as online... no deals... not good here... should buy in S'pore... support our own economy.

You must have visited the wrong area. Bo Ai Street in Taipei is camera heaven where you can make very good deals. Guess you missed a good opportunity. I bought my 70-200G there and saved a good weeks' holiday money.

That's if you're carrying a flash. Also, when you already have 2 batteries in the VG, the tray will have to be removed and put elsewhere and have to take care not to damage it. Too troublesome for me. For me I find that just need to be well prepared for the day's shoot. If you know that it's gonna be a heavy shooting day, just prepare another set of batteries. So far the batteries for my 7D and A700 is able to last me more than a day's shoot. Maybe, I'm too conservative with the shutter. :dunno:

Perhaps and apparently, SONY's exclusion of AA batts are a marketing strategy..
to use ONLY their rechargeable ones.

Well if you carry a camera bag, there are compartments for batteries... for me, I need the backup when I travel, especially to Cambodia, in the villages where there is no electricity... AAs are pretty useful... especially NiMH as they serve dual purpose... I carry around 24-48 NiMH AAs at any one time cos my 7D can be powered by my 6 NP-400s or by 6 NiMH AAs.... and that usually serves me for around 10 days without a charge... pity the A900 can't and the list price of the SONY battery is like $95?!

under normal situations, i guess the two batts in the VG wil suffice. but its always good to have a backup.. esp for wedding photographers.. you cant expect to take a break and recharge your batteries at the reception.

anyway the tray and AAs are just very small space sacrifices.. and much cheaper than getting the 90 over dollars sony batt. rechargeable AAs cost only a fraction of that.

agreed. i rather have the option....

I see. That's worth looking at then cos so far I've not used AA batteries on my 7D before.

Conclusion

So here we are. Show time. Is the Sony A900 the camera for you?
If you currently have Canon or Nikon lenses it's a tough call. Canon owners have the option of the new 5D MKII at a price comparable to the A900, complete with video capability and Live View, so I don't see too many defections from that camp.
For the Nikon camp, at least those who want or need resolution higher than 12MP, the D3x is an attractive but really expensive call. Though there's likely a lower cost version on the way at some point, a 24MP D700x for example, my sense is that this may be some time off. The current almost $4,000 sensor premium of the D3x over the otherwise identical D3 simply doesn't translate into a D700x appearing any time soon.
For those without major lens commitments to other brands the Sony A900 offers tremendous value for the money. In almost every objective test criteria measured on DxOMark the A900 comes in in the top two or three, and in many categories does so against camera either costing twice as much or offering half the resolution. While not the king of any one hill, it is a sterling all-around performer in almost every category.
When it comes to build quality and handling, the A900 has little to fault and much to like. Yes, I've bitched about a few things in the above review, but then there's always something to criticize, because no product is perfect. It just comes down to the compromises that one is will to make.
These are hard economic times for almost everyone, and the indications are that things are going to get tougher before they get any better. In that type of climate a good all-rounder at a competitive price is what's needed, and the Sony A900 DSLR offers just that, along with class leading resolution.
I believe that for the first half of 2009 the two hot pro and serious amateur cameras are going to be the Canon 5D MKII and the Sony A900, both priced under US $3,000 and both offering some unique features and capabilities.
I hope to have a shoot-out between these two contenders here in the near future.

Well maybe you had not had an emergency before... the AAs can power the camera for almost as long as 2 NP400s... 2 x NP400s = 3000 mAh at 7.2 V while each AA is 2700 mAh and with 6 that makes 7.2 V at 2700 mAh... so pretty effective although just a little heavier I would say.

Hmm... well, it would be really hard to see AA battery enclosures from Sony...
