A7r mk2

Hi everyone,

thought I would join this thread as I now have a Sony A7rii - bought in the US the day it was released (I was there on holiday) and took it to Iceland for 2 weeks and again NYC for a week. My Lenses:
Sony 16-35
Sony 28-70
Canon 70-200L
Adaptor: Viltrox

My observations with working with the camera now for over a month if anyone interested:

Awesome camera and fantastic DR, With Native lens focusing spot on and fast! with 70-200L (Canon) and Viltrox adaptor - as fast as on Canon in good light some occasional misses in low light.
Does not work well with Sigma lenses at all (Viltrox Adpt) - occasionally focuses bit most times just wont focus unless on Manuel mode and even then struggles - I have a pro friend in the US having the same problems with the metabones adaptor. I will say I didn't buy the Camera with using the Canon lenses in mind, I bought it knowing I was going to buy native lenses so I do get a little annoyed when I see people write about issues when using non-native, yes would be nice but reality is the camera is a Sony not a Canon/Nikon etc. Anyway thats my personal grip and defence - everyone to their own opinion :)
Clunky interface and def not intuitive like a Canon!! Some great feature and its feature packed but reality is most wont use half them and its a hassle to get around the menu system for sure. In saying that though; I have had the camera now for over a month and have it set up to how I like it (almost identical to the Canon) and it works for me.
Form factor is obviously smaller and this takes getting used to but I like it and it feels great in my hand much better than prev Sony's - yes stick a 70-200L on it and the weight saving is negligible :)
The Viltrox adaptor works well and is reasonably built - not as solid as the metabones but essentially does the same job and is $99 :) We had 2 x A7rii's in Iceland one with Metabones and one with Viltrox really there is little difference in actually working but yes the metabones is a little more solid (and can be updated with firmware down the track) hard to justify the extra expense (for me anyway) For now thats all I can be bothered to write - I hope all who have this camera is enjoying it as much as I am if not bummer

Nice review.

I like to know abt the DR. Coming from a D800 with 14 bit, I find it annoying with my Sony a7r. With my a7r, I have banding issues w photographing the sky.

I m wondering if I upgrade to a7r2, will it solve the problem?

Hi Jace,

Technically, to deal with smoother gradient where banding is concern, we need more bits for data, and with all data preserved. And that's why we take in RAW.

However, it seems Sony ARW raw format is still 11+7 bit lossy-compressed format. Correct me if I am wrong :) D800 is still a very capable camera.

Ya Lor, Sam! *sniff*

I would argue that most people wouldn't even notice the difference, you would have to be pixel peeping to a huge degree and I think the issue has been blown out of proportion on the net by people inin the minority. just my 2c

Ya. I m a pixel peeper n photo retoucher

A7Sii:
14 bit RAW (yay)
No PDAF though

same 12mp.
Raw file still the same..
Same body grip and buttons as A7ii/A7Rii.
Shoot 4K internal.
Faster AF in Video mode.
5 Axis Steadyshot inside.
More CDAF.. No PDAF.

So those request 16bit or 14 bit uncompressed raw ?
As you sayd uncompressed raw.. Right now a7xx cameras has all 14 bit compressed raw..and ppl is asking for uncompressed 14bit raw.. Some website describe the bit depth of Sony raw as 11+7 lossy compressed raw.. But that's not accurate.. They are still 14bit but compressed, and in some cases you see some artifact...

Anyway they didn't say anything about the compression on the new a7s2..so I assuming that is going to be the same as before

Some photos taken with the A7rii and Voigtlander Nokton 50mm F1.1 @sgtcc
Well for a novice MF shooter like me, i must say its pretty damn user friendly shooting wide open. Gotta admit i miss AF though.

any latest update on pricing and stock availability ?

and now that uncompressed raw is to be answered in future firmware updates i wonder what will be the next gripe of non sony users.. perhaps release of new FE model way too soon like what sony did with the A7sII?
To be fair the compression thing was kind of a big deal, for some user was honestly a deal breaker, not for me obviously.. Same goes for the overheating and the true ISO 50.. Those are the next big thing that song has to take care of.. Overheating first I think...
