Just tried the 50 1.4 for the first time... Bokeh looks beautiful but a bit worried about the sharpness. Even at f5.6 its quite soft :dunno:

Isit possible I got a lemmon  :dunno:

Hmmm... That's odd. By 2.0/2.8 it should be razor-sharp already. Why not meet up with some of the other Sony bros who hang out here and at the other forum and test?

Did you miss focus? The focusing system might be a little different from Nikon...

ah nice buy there~ :)
i got my 50mm f/1.4 from cp as well, was soft even at f4, and depth of field was about the same as f/2 so suspected somethin was wrong, so set it at f22 and took a pic and the pic was full blown white :bsmilie:
this was on aperture priority.
so brought to ssc suspecting oily aperture blades /stuck or something, turns out the aperture spring broke or something, so pics were overexposed. so sent in for repairs cos CP said they din have stock for an exchange, took 5 days.

now its very sharp at f/2.8-f4 abouts.

mmm...quality problem with 50 f1.4 lens?

No bro, I tried around many of such tests and always seems to be VERY soft. even at f5.6!

I just did the "Batery" test to see FF or BF and confirmed got serious BF!

Here take a look

These are crops of the frame and full size image! you can see why I was disappointed at the outputs lol!

Focus on the 1st battery for all of these

I don't think thats a good price , i remember i got mine at $1350 for the body only. I would avoid CP marina at all costs , the sales people there don't have a clue. CP Peninsula has a sony digital imaging shop with someone who knows his stuff.

Bro,

Since its not available anywhere else, CP is the only choice for me... I don't mind paying the extra $300, I just know that the D300 body only costs about the same price I paid for A700 + 50 1.4 + 8GB + Extra Original Battery + B+W Slim / Clear filter (The filter alone is $90+)

Bro,

What's distance between each battery?
Otherwise, it's more like your cam has BF problem.
It looked like quite common that dSLR has got such problem :thumbsd:
Try another wide aperture Sony or Minolta lens if possible to confirm.
No biggie. Just bring it down to SSC to get it calibrated.
Personally, I wouldn't buy another cam w/o focus adjustment.

FYI, I was taken aback when both my A700 & A350 had such a problem

Bro , not CP in general , specifically CP marina are clueless about cameras in general. They are just plain salespersons. You should instead go to CP Peninsula and their sony digital imaging store. Andy is more well versed in sony products and probably will give you better prices. Just an advice for your future purchases. I believe you must purchase the 85mm , and the 135mm soon? at the very least go for the 70-300g.

Please put the GST credits to good use.

bring the body along for testing also
it could be the fault of either one or both.....

Bro, The batteries were very close together. I used the spot focus point and focused on the 1st one!

Yup you are right but I dunno it its my luck but I have never had this issue before

I took the complete set to Cathey today and told them that I just bought it last night, but they told me to take it to SSC ;( as this is a common issue and they need to calibrate. Sony will not accept the exchange so the only choice is to get it calibrated.

I tried a few other bodies and a few other lens but all seems to have the same issue, even the sales guy tested and the focus was out!

I tried the 50 2.8 macro lens as well it also back focused...

Finally I took the complete set to SSC and they happily took it in and marked this as "urgent" I will hopefully get it back by wednesday

Lets see...

Bro, are you saying 70-300 is a good lens? The Nikon version is a modest lens but not great because of its slow max aperture! But dunno any thing about the Sony version! CZ 85 1.4 and CZ 135 1.8 are definitely on my wish list...

for the price of 1.1k the 70-300G is a very good zoom lens~

Hmmm... Nikon AF-S 70-300 f4.5 f5.6 VR lens costs around $800 and the older version without VR costs around $550 only!

Don't really understand why the Sony version is 1.1k

I will start reading about these lens and see how :)

Both my cams were 3 to 4 cm off when taking pics at about 2m away. Your case may not be so bad. SSC service is good & A700 is a good cam  except for this minor glitch that I had experienced. Anyway, good luck & let us know your outcome.

Sony version is a G, which is Sony/KM premium line, equivalent to Nikon's gold ringed one.

Its SSM also and street price is closer to 1k , lowest i've been offered was 1k. Don't forget sony lenses all come with free hoods .
