A55 availability status

One thing is for sure, you CANNOT pre-focus when taking self portraits. What are you going to pre-focus on?

Can lah ! :bsmilie: ...you can switch to manual focus and pre-focus on something about the same distance to where you will be standing later ...or you can just set to auto-focus and the 10s timer, focus priorty shuttle will take care of you when you dash to the spot where your AF point is on.

A swivel screen has nothing to do with photographic skills at all, it's not even a must have tool, it is just a convenient tool. Of course one can shoot even if there is no screen at all just like the film days. But since Sony wants to make a 360 swivel screen for convenience sake, they really should not have made the hinge at the bottom but at the side instead.

I beg to differ, having the LCD hinge at the bottom makes the cam feels more balanced and centralised when using it. ...I was recently at my favourite photography shop molesting 2 of the latest cams ...an A33 and a FZ-100, ...the A33's LCD fits between the hands like a sniper's scope, feels very natural and fast ...the side swivel LCD of the FZ-100 really CMI, it seems to be in the way of the left wrist/arm and certainly feels weird shooting pictures while holding DSLR style but framing it Video style.

Bro, you sure you know what you talking about ? One thing is for sure, you CANNOT pre-focus when taking self portraits. What are you going to pre-focus on?

Wah lau eh, kids these days! So for the last 25+ years that we've had autofocus cameras, nobody has been able to take a self-portrait with a tripod?

I think it's obviously *you* that does not know what they're talking about. You can pre-focus on anything. A bag, a marker, even the ground where you will be standing.

Your "in the box" thinking will limit you severely going forward. Try to stop restricting yourself, can?

But since Sony wants to make a 360 swivel screen for convenience sake, they really should not have made the hinge at the bottom but at the side instead.

I disagree. As stated, the screen is so small that it's basically useless for self-portraits on a tripod. and having the screen on the left just gets in the way of holding the camera properly.

MO has already started. If response is good, we will be able to get it on Sept 20. ;)

That's where you're wrong bro. You have mentioned "about the same distance" and that is not the standard which I am used to. I know you'll point out these simple workarounds but it's not accurate and not the right way to do it.

1) Self timer for self portrait is never a good option simply because you cannot have your face to pre-focus on. So you can only "roughly" pre-focus on the spot you think you might be standing. And since the camera is on the tripod, it's also difficult to manoeuvre. It's even more troublesome if you want to take several differently composed self portraits, not just one. In the end, its not accurate because for self portrait, its your face which you want to focus on, not the ground.

2) The correct and accurate way is to use an IR remote control and a 360 swivel screen to "roughly" tell you your composition. It doesn't even have to be a big screen as someone else had misunderstood. But since Sony made the hinge below, their 360 swivel cannot be used with a tripod or even on any flat surface.

So, please don't tell me to pre-focus on the ground for self portraits. I don't do aga-aga when taking photos.

I know I know, you are talking about taking self portraits hand holding the camera with the swivel screen dropping down below. But only young girls do that ok?

I'm talking about serious self portrait on a tripod with a beautiful scenery as a background, could be daylight or nightscene. And not just one shot but several differently composed shots.

Screen size is not a real problem because you only want to roughly know your composition from about 2 - 2.5 m distance.

To me bro it's better than nothing to see at all ^_^ to me if I cam see I'm inside the frame that good enough for me better than guessing or asking a cute chick to take my photo (hmmm looks like I just find a way to approach a lady hehehe)

I still prefer the left side swivel in special occasions like self portrait via tripod. but this is just me :sweatsm:

I've used Olympus DSLR with left side swivel I didn;t find it getting into my way holding the cam... but how often do you use the LCD swivel? to me during special occasion like talking self portrait via tripod, over the head shooting, waist shooting maybe like 5% of the time or less. I think any swivel is good for me be it bottom (Sony style) or Side (Olympus Style) both design has pros and cons

hmmm very attractive price... hope MS color will give few discount I dont need freebies lols maybe just one spare battery will do.

The only thing I am a bit dissappointed is the Exposure Bracketing only .3 and .7 stop increment for 3F was hoping for 3F 1 or 2 stop increment this is more useful when doing PP manual HDR or combining multiple exposure

As far as i know all apsc sony cam cannot do 1or2 stop braketing (not sure on A700) . this is very disappointing for me aslo , till now never changed
