I disagree. 85mm on an APS-C cropped body is WAY too "long" especially for the hobby photogs and the moms and dads trying to take a portrait of their baby. They'll want to be able to get close, and not need to stand 3-4 meters away.

On APS-C, 50mm (75mm equiv) is ideal.

I c. I knew that 50mm is equivalent to 75mm on aps-c.

I thought the best focal length for portrait is 85-135, and 85 is about 130 on aps-c.
I think 85mm is good for both ff and aps-c while 135 on aps-c is a bit too long.

And for the bokeh, I guess 85mm f1.8 should have better bokeh than 50 f1.8 on aps-c.

Just my opinion.

Isn't the 50/1.8 a typical DT lens? Ie. the 85 lens is more for high-end, being designed for full frame, and so are the 50/1.7 and 50/1.4 so it seems that Sony is launching a lens that suits APC-S users keeping the pricing lower than any of the other lenses I mentioned here.

Dont underestimate the M50F1.7. I was surprised to find it bright and sharp even on A900

Exactly. It's a 1986-era lens made by Minolta for it's film bodies.

The curvy lines looks great on the new bodies but I am rather disappointed to see the change in the on-off switch, the 18-55mm lens and the 50mm f1.8 lens. Why can't we be different from the C & N camps? Why do we want to follow what they have.

I'm begining to lost interest in Sony now.

My disappointment is not so much of whether the newer cams are for beginners or pros, but rather the differentiation between Sony from the rest.

Well, we need to consider that these cameras are not targeted at the more experienced people, but at the first-time users.

And seriously, the 18-55 has quite impressive image quality, though I agree there should be more differentiation. Maybe that's the whole reason? To make it easy for users to switch to Sony from Nikon?

Though initial impressions of the A230, 330 and 380 with the 18-55mm lens seem to make it a reaaaaaaaaaally nice walkaround/backup body. And the new flash can be used as a wireless trigger, so that baby is coming on my A900.

Another thing to consider is that these new models have an improved DRO and JPEG engine. Let's see how it performs once the reviews are out.

I'm not sure how 'new' or knowledgable you are in photography but back in the old film days there was no such thing as APC-S having crop factors. Now there is a difference and manufacters have decided to make changes in lens design as well.

Hence the reason people now talk about APC-S and full frame for both bodies and lenses.
