but with the 18-70mm some say the distortion is quite troublesome... i also seen it in some lens review site. and in the end you will finally upgrade to another better and expensive lens but with 50mm u got nothing to loose. :)

sorry.. i dont want to be rude but for you would be an idiot to pass a d200 for only 850 SGD.....!!!! lets just say i planned to buy a d50 with lens kit just for trying out a nikon for the first time. so i guess i still got some spare money to buy good gear.. the 300 SGD is just a platform to know how good and cheap nikon lens can be considering nikon has sigma, tokina and tamron for 3rd party lens. but with the 50mm i still can buy presents for my family this x'mas... ;)
but really after i read through the internet.. 50mm is a lens to keep.

some of the 3rd party lens are great pieces of glass with exceptional value so do consider them as well.. :)

D200 for 850 SGD!?!? make sure u did check it properly though.. not cursing or dissing u but sometimes when things seem too good to be true.. they probably are..

but great buy n hope u have fun with it!

actually it's my friend's friend whos selling.... just hope he didn't made a mistake on giving the price hehehee :P

Yes, indeed the 18-70 does produce distorted images at wide focal lengths..but i must say it is a piece of full rounder lens..the 50mmf/1.8 is the most budget and quality lens produce by Nikon..but most of us who buy it usually have a common zoom lens to start with..

Just ask around, who would dare say he/she bought a DSLR/SLR body and buying the 50mm as his/her one and only first lens..

All in all the decision to purchase which lens is still with you..:) Hope u put in some thoughts and won't feel getting stranded with the 50mm..

Merry X'mas!

r u sure it is D200? maybe D70 or D70s ... then $850 is reasonable ... :D

.... do we need so wide angle? i think 18-200 more versatile for different purposes ...

i havent used it before but from comments posted by those who have, it is a good piece of glass... well.. if TS really wants to go all out with landscapes and architectural n can spare the moolah... the 12-24 is good!

on the other hand, the 18-200 VR is a relatively more economical lens for a start, and with a great range too.. very fine optics as well.. only gripe i have about it is its aperture range of 3.5 at its widest n 5.6 at its tele ends... so might face some problems in certain situations.. but for landscape n architectural with tripod.. shouldnt be a problem.. :)

I don't know abt you guys. For me, I would not get the 50mm prime without any other wider lens. It can be tough to take architectural shots at 50mm. I'll take the 18-70mm in this case.

i 3rd this

Nikkor 12-24 is very expensive..can try the Tokina 12-24..sharpness wise won't lose too much to the Nikkor one..
