a 'good' tripod

1)the legs, eg, gitzo
2)RRS plate with screw lock instead of lever lock
3)plates, eg L plate, lens plate.
4)a ball head.

anything else i missed out?

try GT0540, max height 142cm..10cm higher than the 0530 one...weights only 780grams and folds to 48cm.(GT0530 folds to about 53cm)

Add it with a kangrinpoche NB-3a..total weight 1.13KG..its light..tripod can take 5kg..

if you want light..with a reasonable height(if you are around 1.7m), this is a good choice..

In my opinion, benro angel series, it folds down to a very short height, but it has like 5 sections..haha...

You won't go wrong with Gitzo but they are expensive.. I can't afford the carbon fibre ones.

and my d3 has this 'digital level check' too IIRC.

as for the L-plate, apparently, they fixed the problem already because in their website, they showed that the plate can be shifted to accomodate the cables..i dont think they mention it but i think that's why they designed the plate to be 'movable'.:dunno:

Hmm.. ok, I see now, they made a change to the bottom screw so that it can slide sideways.

CF tripods should be lighter for the same class but the heads which are not CF are heavy also, so a CF tripod with a heavy head may feel unbalanced when you're carrying it, making it feel heavier. :dunno:

Not all CF tripods are the made the same way nor weigh the same. The Gitzo 6X is the lightest because of the higher percentage of carbon. Other CF tripods have varying amount of composite material and because they are usually table rolled carbon tubes, have higher proportion of glue = heavier. Even Gitzo's Basalt models are quite similar to the Manfrotto carbon composite ones in terms of weight. The weight difference of the Gitzo 6X CF tripods is very noticeable.

other than weight (it should be lighter...), carbon fibre is also stiffer than aluminium so there is less vibration and flexing, thus should make it more stable...

My M158n6 CF Benro tripod has served me well for just under 2 yrs now... reasonably light, yet stable with a D200, SB800 and 70-200 mounted...

So far so good with my D70s setup. I never overload my tripods, so I don't foresee much problem if you don't overload the tripod also.

Recently used my 30D with 2X and the 70-200mm on my Manfrotto 190MF4 but the pictures on Mr birdy was not sharp at all....:sweat: suspect that the tripod is not stable enough for this setup, need to do more testing :sweat: Saw the Benro on that outing, looks strong

What about the new PPCP tripod, the Stetige? I don't think it's up to the standard of a Gitzo or Arca-Swiss, but maybe can it compete with benro and possibly manfrotto?

if instability is due to tripod, you might want try to weigh it down, say with your camera bag... that can help to stabilize the tripod...

of course, non-sharpness might be due to other variables, like using the 2x extender will reduce sharpness of the setup...(does the Canon 70-200 need to switch off IS for tripod use? no experience here... for Nikon 70-200 VR its recommended if tripod and head is locked down...)
