7D or 5D Mark II?

You can't go wrong with either camera. The 5D MkII has the edge on IQ and the 7D has the edge on advanced technical specifications.

I chose the 7D and I am going through some AF problems with it. I've sent it in to the Service Centre and have every confidence that it will be resolved. That is not to say that every 7D has AF problems. I believe that only a few have been affected and they appear to be related to a subset of the "first" batch that Canon sold (at the end of September and beginning of October). The other 7D related problem .... ghosting, appears to have been resolved with today's announcement of Firmware release 1.1.0.

The 7D is truly a technical marvel. I've used a non-affected 7D, one that worked as advertised, and I found it a joy to use in all modes! I've also used the 5D MkII and can only say that I wish there was a camera that merged both features of the 7D and 5D, say a full frame 7D.

Regardless of the choice you make, I am sure that the camera will bring you years of enjoyment. Good luck with your decision.

well said. thanks!;)

To my eyes, yes, definitely. Guess it's the AA filter. I won't say 'soft' per se, just not 'edgy' sharp.

Didn't some reviews also mention that the 5Dmk2 out resolves some of the L glass?

CP Quotes MK2 @ $3,950
MS Color @3,750
all after gst

MS color is also trusted store right? I wonder why their prices have a big difference.

Is MS cash only and CP is any payment method? MS can usually give good prices.

Both are in the "reputable" category.

if i remember correctly, john is selling 5dmk2 body at 3800 cash /gst

does anybody know the prices at the new store opp john? SLR revolution?

cathay usually quote pretty crappy pricing. i normally won't shop there unless i can't get the items elsewhere.

going down in person usually fetch a better rate. can bargain but only with the right people.

lith ion batteries do not have to be initialized. just charge it till it's full and you can start using it right away.

i would chose 5D Mark II over 7D.. if i have the money :(

Like the TS, I was contemplating upgrading my 40D to either a 7D or the 5Dmk2. It took a lot of soul searching as I really liked some of the features of the 7D including flash controller, having a flash, expansion of ISO to 12,800 (vs. 3,200 on the 40D). Given the price gap with the 5Dmk2, the 7D really seemed like a good buy, even though FF has its many advantages.

I was advised to go to the camera shop and take photos using both cameras and then go home to analyze. Besides the DOF control of the 5Dmk2, I thought that the IQ between the 7D and 5Dmk2 was close (but 5Dmk2 still wins). I then asked my wife to look at the photo comparisons without telling her which photos were taken by which camera. She was able to choose the 5Dmk2 in all circumstances. Note that she is a layman, but likes to be photographed; and all comparison photos were both with deep and shallow DOF, so it wasn't that she just liked the bokeh on the 5Dmk2.

Since my boss likes the 5Dmk2 images better, I went with the 5Dmk2... deep in my heart, I also knew that if I bought the 7D, I would be still hankering to upgrade to a FF in the future. I love photography, but I'm also a gearhead, so don't flame it for it.

I'm pleased with the 5Dmk2, but found 1 weakness - the auto focus, which seems to be worse than my 40D. Other than the centre AF, the outer AF points are quite slow. The AF points are also clustered in the middle of the photo. You can focus and recompose, but might shift DOF for shots with thin DOF.

Thanks, going through same thought process as you and this is very helpful.

From the specs, it seems the 7D is much closer to the 5D2 than the 50D is. As a 50D user (who is tempted to upgrade), I'm more inclined to go 7D.

I'm a jack of all trades (master of none) photographer, and I want a cam that is similar:

Landscape - 5D2 edges out, but 7D will suffice with a good lens.
Action/Sports - 7D's extra reach and high fps trumps the 5D2.
Portraits - 5D2's FF has a slight advantage but 7D is not bad either.
Macro - 7D has reach that 5D2 doesn't.
Wildlife - 7D has reach, as well as high fps (in case I find myself shooting a sprinting cheetah on the plains of Africa)

These reasons alone, I would pick the 7D for the flexibility as a bao-sua-bao-hai body.

Also, I personally feel there's no better general purpose lens on a FF body that can replace my 17-55 f/2.8IS. There's the 24-70L but the lack of IS (and cost) is an issue for me.

Also, the $ saved on 7D can be spent on other stuff.
