7D or 5D Mark II?

Skip the crop and go full frame. Best investment ever!

is the 24mm of 24-105 not good enough?

well from my use the 24mm on a full frame is actually quite wide.
however still not as awsome as a 16mm on a full frame (ie, 10mm on APS-C)
and so far ive used the 16-35II and 24-70 for landscape/interior stuff. 16-35 is much better hands down.

besides if you've got a good condition 10-22 youre basically chucking away 800 bucks by going to full frame.

that being said though, there tends to be a tendency to head towards full frame for landscape proffesionals. maybe coz they physically want to blow the pictures up bigger but whatever the reason you might want to keep that in mind as well..

Currently same situation as TS. It's either a new 5DII or 7D for me. Do agree that the 7D issue is abit over hype, but it still left abit of a bad taste with me. Though I got 2 friends that own the 7D and have no issue with it.

Still adopting a wait and see attitude. If the 7D ghosting/AF issue is solved within say 3-4mths, I will get the 7D. The bells and whistles @ that price is worth it. Would love to get the 5DII, but I still feel it's over price currently.

And to TS, a crop body can shoot landscape as well with 10-22, jumping over to FF just for this single factor is not worth it. I believe 7D ISO performance is respectable as well. my personal opinion is, i dun make a living out of this (ocassional freelance not counted!), no point splurging so much, the money saved can be use for other meaningful stuffs.

Or we could just wait for 3D ;)

then we'll have to wait forever... haha! since after 3D came out, there will be problems and the next thing you might be saying is wait for 2D? 8D? :bsmilie:

5Dmk2's IQ really blows u away..u feel like every shot is a damn good shot. :bsmilie:
ditch the 10-22 and get a 3rd party UWA... sigma's 15-30 is pretty good!

hmm...that's a good question.. unfortunately i can't comment cause i haven't tried that combo yet.

but regardless of lens.. the body is great. going to get one myself sometime soon(i hope)

I'm 80% convinced of doing the same. Might as well post in B&S my 450D and 10-22mm soon :bsmilie:

Ironically people will not be satisfied. ;p

All Canon need to do, is solve the ghosting issue and the AF issue, and I will gladly get the 7D. :bsmilie:

5d2 is probably a bigger step forward, u do not need the speed of the 7d for landscape anyway. And of course many will say the higher MP count is a boon for landscape shooting.

I do more landscapes and buildings as well and i am least bothered by the slower AF on the 5d2

That's true. The only advantages I can think of that the 7D has would be the digital level in the VF and its ability to use the EF-S 10-22.

Oh and it's also more than a thousand bucks cheaper. Not relevant if $$$ is not an issue of course. :D

Just get 5D2 la. IMO, if you're a casual trigger happy person, IQ beats performance (i.e. speed, AF etc) anytime. There'll of course be moments you wish you have 7D, but that's perhaps when F1 is here or when Formula Drift is on, but on most day-to-day, I think IQ would satisfy anyone more anything else. There simply isn't a best-of-both-worlds camera, though I think 1DsIII is close for what I do. LOL.

Money if relevant for a lot of people. 7D gives the better bang for the buck with good high ISO performance and faster AF (when the problem eventually get rectify). Ability to go with EF-S lenses is a plus if people have invested in a lot of EF-S lenses.

Like the TS, I was contemplating upgrading my 40D to either a 7D or the 5Dmk2. It took a lot of soul searching as I really liked some of the features of the 7D including flash controller, having a flash, expansion of ISO to 12,800 (vs. 3,200 on the 40D). Given the price gap with the 5Dmk2, the 7D really seemed like a good buy, even though FF has its many advantages.

I was advised to go to the camera shop and take photos using both cameras and then go home to analyze. Besides the DOF control of the 5Dmk2, I thought that the IQ between the 7D and 5Dmk2 was close (but 5Dmk2 still wins). I then asked my wife to look at the photo comparisons without telling her which photos were taken by which camera. She was able to choose the 5Dmk2 in all circumstances. Note that she is a layman, but likes to be photographed; and all comparison photos were both with deep and shallow DOF, so it wasn't that she just liked the bokeh on the 5Dmk2.

Since my boss likes the 5Dmk2 images better, I went with the 5Dmk2... deep in my heart, I also knew that if I bought the 7D, I would be still hankering to upgrade to a FF in the future. I love photography, but I'm also a gearhead, so don't flame it for it.

I'm pleased with the 5Dmk2, but found 1 weakness - the auto focus, which seems to be worse than my 40D. Other than the centre AF, the outer AF points are quite slow. The AF points are also clustered in the middle of the photo. You can focus and recompose, but might shift DOF for shots with thin DOF.

nice to hear read this. thanks for sharing...

Guys, I remember reading a thread here last month about 5D2 Image being too soft at 100% even with L lens compared to crop cam.
It was like a 2~3 pages of debates but can't find the thread anymore. Just Curious to know if it is true.

To my eyes, yes, definitely. Guess it's the AA filter. I won't say 'soft' per se, just not 'edgy' sharp.

I seems that from ur responses, money is not of a problem to you and you have more or less tilt towards 5Dm2. Just get it and have fun!

You can't go wrong with either camera. The 5D MkII has the edge on IQ and the 7D has the edge on advanced technical specifications.

I chose the 7D and I am going through some AF problems with it. I've sent it in to the Service Centre and have every confidence that it will be resolved. That is not to say that every 7D has AF problems. I believe that only a few have been affected and they appear to be related to a subset of the "first" batch that Canon sold (at the end of September and beginning of October). The other 7D related problem .... ghosting, appears to have been resolved with today's announcement of Firmware release 1.1.0.

The 7D is truly a technical marvel. I've used a non-affected 7D, one that worked as advertised, and I found it a joy to use in all modes! I've also used the 5D MkII and can only say that I wish there was a camera that merged both features of the 7D and 5D, say a full frame 7D.

Regardless of the choice you make, I am sure that the camera will bring you years of enjoyment. Good luck with your decision.

U know I'm really inclined getting 7D but the issues quite degrade my interest with it. Ok its just birth pains but imagine your self in the shoes of those complaining. They're maybe batches but still it's not acceptable atleast for me. You know the feeling of investing on something and having to bring your new gadget to SC after a few days of using it? It sucks! there maybe a few cases but for me the number is getting considerable! It's all over the forums. :dunno:
