70-200mm f2.8 VR+2x teleconverter vs 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR

am contemplating whether i should get the

70-200mm f2.8 VR+2x teleconverter
or the
80-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR

By the way, i shoot mostly outdoor nature and wildlife.

would rather go for the 70-800 wuth 1.7TC

i have been very impressed with the performance of the 70-200 and i feel it is more versatile than the 80-400...

and you have to shoot with the 70-200 to see the beautiful bokeh it is capable of producing....
i just love the bokeh... so smooth and silky....

Anyone try a AF-S VR 70-200 F2.8 on a D50 body yet? The Nikkor lens catalog stated "VR operation works with the Nikon F6, F5, F100, F80, F75, F65, D1/D2 series, D100 and D70s/D70". Am wondering whether it works for D50.

yes it does.

when the VR lens was out, the D50 was not out yet.

most shots are just using the 70-200, without TC, cause if want to use TC, must borrow from my brother...a bit troublesome....

I am currently using the 70-200mm f2.8 VR with 2X and in my opinion the quality of images are not that great, in fact, the 70-300mm i used to have seem to be better. So, i try to avoid using it with the 2X extender that I have.

However, if you do have the 70-200mm then you would absolutely love this lens. I simply love it and considering the crop factor of 300mm i think you could learn to make do with it... but if you using the D50, then potentially you shouldn't be getting that lens as the camera might not be able to take advantage of such sharpness (read it somewhere). 70-300 is good enough cept it hunts a little, but do consider getting a gear that you could grow into rather than what you need NOW.
