No built-in flash is not an issue to me as i always use my external one. Even when i use my 10D, i've never used the internal flash too.

I guess question is, if there is a built-in flash, would some people not buy the camera because of it? I think not, unless there is some trade-off. For example, for me, if choosing between brighter viewfinder and built-in flash, the pop-up goes. No question about it. But if it is a question of $50 and maybe 50 gm of extra weight, I'd say, why not?

actually, I like the built in flash.. It does not reduce any pro-ness in the camera if it has a built in flash.. It saves your day if you need flash and you could not carry the heavy external flash with you. think of it, why would in-built flash reduce the brightness of viewfinder or the quality of pix.. Adding the flash neither impacts the viewfinder nor the sensor.. at most it draws extra battery power.

You need space on the top dome for the flash. Canon has 4 choices :

  1. Make the top dome larger
  2. Decrease the size of the pentaprism
  3. Leave out the flash
  4. Circumvent the laws of physics as we know it and have two things occupy the same space

Personally I vote for (4) because then they can make a camera bag for all my gear that's small enough to fit into the small pocket in my jeans. But, hey, that's just me.

i'd vote for 4 too. but why bother with teh camera bag? you could then circumvent more physical laws to pack a 1Ds body, many L lenses and a power flash into a ixus body!

But what do i know. I'm just a physics teacher :dunno:. my students have attempted to circumvent many physical laws in their assignments.

Well, some would say such a small body does not look pro enough. Looks are everything, don't you know that by now? Who cares about the image?

Which brings to mind another great idea - a camera case in the shape of a 1Ds where you put an Ixus inside.

That's why for some it's gd while others like myself, not necessary.

One mans meat can be another poison.
Some dun need build in flash, some live by it.... its subjective yah.

Personally I prefer build in flash to go lite cos I hate lugging full blown equipment that makes the overall load heavy.

4 is the best but we would need another Albert Einstein.

5. Take the D700 apart and reverse engineer.

From dpreview's review of the D700 viewfinder:

Viewfinder
The D700 uses a slightly different prism to the D3; it's not quite as big and bright (and only offers a 95% coverage compared to the D3's 100%), but it's still superb and clearly shows the benefit of a full frame sensor in this important area.

The 5D viewfinder has 96% view coverage. BTW, I have yet to use the flash on the D700 as it goes to ISO 25600. But I'm glad to have it in case I need it.

My question is why IXUS 80? Why not the G9? :)

Who we need is the inventor of Doraemon. His pocket is exactly the technology we're looking for.

I think the 5D's decision not to have a built-in flash may be influenced by the desire to have it match the 20D / 30D's form factor more closely. And also there were no other full frame cameras with a built-in flash at that time. The comparison between the D700 and D3 is exactly what I'm afraid of - built-in flash = dimmer viewfinder. But I'll take any full frame viewfinder image over the biggest, brightest crop viewfinder any day - I definitely see a full frame in my future some day as my eyesight gets weaker.

I think it might be hard to fit the larger cameras into a 1Ds shape. Someone with too much free time should explore this with a papercraft model :)

993..

com on ... make it #1000 ...

then maybe cannon will listen to us and bypass mkII and straight to MKIII ;

if it matter at all

push push ...

maybe Canon will give a complimentary 5D2 to the person who post the 1000th post for helping to promote it. ;p

they will probably give the rumored 50D (see other threads) instead

come on ... up for rumors

make our live merrier :kiss::kiss::kiss:

We're so close to making local history for a NON-EXISTENT camera thread here ;)

Let me be the 999. :devil:

Well... looks like the 50D is gonna steal the thunder here, if the rate of leaks is like what was for the D700...
