50mm f/1.4: Canon or Sigma?

Which 50mm f/1.4 prime lens is on your Canon DSLR?

canon 1.4 is notorious for its AF problem. I know very well cos my copy AF was spoilt also. better to spend a bit of time to calibrate the sigma rather than always spend time going and not forgetting paying gd money to CSC continuously for coming out with such a lousy product. canon ought to be ashamed for producing such poor AF mechanism :thumbsd:

yup, if someone really wanted a 50mm from canon, it would have to be saving up for the 50mm 1.2 L le....

if not then just stay with 50 1.8... save the money for another focal length like 85 or 24 or 100

Wow... Canon's 50mm f1.4 is really that bad huh.... Good thing I never buy. A kind soul in one of the thread warned me about the weak USM motor and prompted me to go do more research. Else I would have bought it long ago.

Bro, i used the EF 50 f1.4 previously... don't think it's THAT bad. it focused pretty well, definitely better than the third parties i have used... though i can't speak of that against Sigma's 50 1.4 cause i haven't used one. I've used Sigma's 10-20 before which was fine, but the EF motor is still faster imo.

However, it does feel plasticky and then again thats why some people actually like it.. It's light and nice to bring around for travel. However, i'm into the Sigma signfiicantly for its bokeh... its the closest thing to a 50/85L at a small fraction of the price (;

I have used both the Canon 50 1.4 for night shots over the weekend

the 50 1.4 is pretty sharp, focusing is good in daylight. at night is where the flaw comes in. it hunts quite poorly in low light, even at 1.4; tends to be out of focus in 40% of the shots even if focus is locked. that comparing to my 85 1.8 at the same f stop

What camera were u using? that can affect the AF speed and accuracy in low light too.

true, i was using a 7D back then. great AF, no problems in low light.. may not be as good as my 85 1.8 then but definitely better than the third parties i had imo

Haha... Yeah loh... But recently both a 17-55mm now quite broke.. Have to recuperate for a while first before buying man...

Yeah I used my friend's EF-50mm f1.4 too and it does work well. If not for the weak USM and Sigma's schweet bokeh....:heart::heart:... I would have bought it. Now just have to save up for the Sigma now.... ;)

85 1.8 has true ring type AF, the 50mm f1.4 definitely cant beat it in terms of AF..

Haha... Yeah loh bro... But seriously gotta recuperate lah! So "siong" man to buy it all...:sweat::sweat:

Sold already! And changed my signature also! ;)

Before I sold my 15-85, I did a comparison between the 2 lenses (15-85 vs. 17-55), the picture quality of the 17-55mm is only slightly better than the 15-85mm! Tested it at 17mm, 35mm and 55mm at the same aperture size. However the trump card of the 17-55 is that my copy is sharp at all focal length even wide open at f/2.8! That is really good cos in low light condition, my 15-85 consistently uses ISO 5000 to 6400, whereas the 17-55 uses at the most ISO 2000! Does really help to reduce the noise!

That said, I do miss my 15-85 sometimes cos of the longer focal length! :( The IQ for the 15-85 is really good now that I compared to the 17-55, and I do regret selling my copy.... I still maintain that as a walk-about lens, the 15-85 is better than the 17-55 in good light condition. Indoor the 17-55 trump the 15-85 big time! Sigh... If only I have the moolah to keep both....

it also will depend on glass use. tamron 17-50mm F2.8 IQ lose to canon 17-55mm. i not use about the new 17-50mm from sigma :D

Actually, the tamron 17-50 matches the 17-55 pretty close in IQ... (if yours is a sharp copy). However, the thing about third parties is that it will usually hunt during low light for AF (if you shoot moving objects - that could be a serious problem)....

On the other hand, i remember reading somewhere on the fred miranda forums that a guy once said his Siggy 50 f1.4 focused more reliably and better than his EF 50 1.4, to me thats good news.. im only assuming that the copy he had was a good one. Personally, i'd prefer to taste the lens before i get it - don't want to have to take risk and send here and there to calibrate and waste my time waiting... worse still, if it comes back from calibration and still does not perform according to expectations (there are cases, trust me. just do a search on google)

Nevertheless, a sharp copy of this Sigma is really sweet! If all else with fails, then just go through the route of MF loh... lol, its still less than 1/3 the price of the 50L - a great bargain for awesome bokeh...

Hi to all senior brother and sister,
Newbie here would like some advice on filter to buy to fix on this Sigma 50m 1.4 ???
Currently 1 shop quote me the Kenko with $105, but another quote $70 for hoya.
Don't know which 1 to choose.
Not much detail for hoya, but the Kenko is scratch proof.
Thanks in advance.
