wow this thread was extremely useful. i was actually considering getting a 50 1.4 lens, and because i use canon 7d naturally leaned towards the canon 50. after reading this thread though it looks like the sigma should not be dismissed! only problem is not everyone so fortunate to go HK to take advantage of cheaper lens 
been reading about auto focus problem for this sigma... thanks and sorry if such a noob question...
