hi...me newbie with SLR...played with it out of the box yesterday....was trying the movie fn last night...?there is no continous focus in movie mode?? cos when the camera move around the room...screen become out of focus and to press the AF button manually, the mechanism sound is quite audible in the clip....didn't bring the manual to workplace ...anyone got answers?

At this moment, since it's quite new for xxxD series to have movie, the functions are quite limited. And moreover, I think it's diff from compact cameras where the focal length and other attributes come in play. :P just thinking lah.

yes, the sound is not quite but SUPER AUDIBLE. :P the AF button is for initial use lor.

i was playing with the video mode the other day and encountered the same problem too, ie. when i use the AF to focus, the mechanism sound became very audible during playback of the video. duh.

hafta use MF for video and that a bummer cuz we're obviously not pros... guess you just have to practise more with MF cuz the AF sound is ridiculously loud? hehehe... i have personally decided never to use video unless i have to.

yeah. but have to admit that the video is super clear! :P

Anybody else concerned with the noise of this camera? That was the reason I decided to get the 450D instead.

MF is a good work around for the focusing problem for video, You will get better after some practice. But I think the small focusing ring on the Kit I 18-55mm len might be quite challenging for MF

Nope there is no continuous focus in movie mode and AF noise is loud. The 500D also doesn't have a "mic in" socket to use an external mic to reduce the AF noise so the only way is either not capture sound and just use layover music or MF the lens.

what noise are you referring to? Noise of AF during Video? Try using MF during video. Although this is my first DSLR, I've no complain/concern with the operational noise from the camera. Sounds pretty good to me :)

Sorry should have clarified. Noise in terms of ISO performance. I've seen some side by side comparisons with the 450D and I consistently notice the images taken with the 500D are noisier than the 450D through ISO 100-800.

i intentionally want noise in monotone, high contrast shot ;) and of course they WILL be noise from 800 iso and above.
i heard that many people talk about 500D picture noise, which made them rethink whether to purchase it or not. Since I am an Olympus user myself, which you know have a bit of 'noise history', one advice an olympian gave me is to try operating below the noise iso. The noise is not that bad actually.
This is probably one of the reason why squeezing as much MP as possible into a sensor is a bad idea. Some even say that after the 20D/30D, the sensor and color of the canon XXD series began to ..ahem...change.

So far, I am happy with the 500D. Its light, LCD is nice, grip is ok, even more so with the battgrip. As for the video, planning a music video shoot which of course without sound. Put in afterwards. hehe.

Bear in mind tho that the video is not the primary function of the camera and it does not record in full 1920HD in 30fps unlike the 5Dmk2, nevertheless, it takes good video IN good light. In the hands of a good videographer, its an excellent budget HD cam, using primes that is hehe..

Yes, when you press the AF function while video'ing will result in a "Zzzzzzzzt" sound upon playback. It's pretty loud too.

As the others have said - try practicing using MF while videoing. Just remember to switch the lens to MF before turning the MF ring.

Does the battery grip give you any advantage in terms of handling if you are only shooting landscape style (not portrait style). I know it gives you longer battery and might better balance the weight depending on the lens, but it doesn't help out with the grip when you hold it normally right?

If you have big hands, it will improve the handling even if you are shooting in landscape. Truthfully, I'm quite appalled with the fit of the BG-E5 on the 500D. I'm getting movement of around 1mm and that doesn't feel very assuring. Felt like the grip was going to fall off evey time I switch from landscape to portrait and vice versa.

I tried it and it gives extra room for grip even for landscape.
Grip 'extra space' gives a slightly similar feel to the 50D.
