17-40 is not really wide angle on 500D's APSC sensor. u are better off with sigma 10-20, canon 10-22 or tokina 11-16, depending on your needs. If you really really want to get a wide angle that can be used for both 500D and 5d mk2 and is still wide angle on both, go for sigma 12-24.
Why buy such an expensive L lens that cant be used effectively on your current equipment?

Bro, seems like you haven't made the most out of your 500d, considering you didn't know where to find the picture styles.

I believe a nice picture taken is not about the camera u use..
The camera itself is a tool to help u take nice picture and thats only when u fully understand it well..as well as de basic of operating this camera aka wat the camera can give u.
Dslr has become so affordable these days, tat so many youngster carrying it as an accessory.
Frankly speaking, hw many of those really understand de basic rules of photography. N hw many of them r not simply using auto mode?
To TS, grasp de basic of photography..wat u wan is a pic that touches ppl, not a picture printed out w "5DmkII or D90.."
If u don believe go to flickr n type 500D, see those pics n ask if u can take de same pics as them since u r using de same cam..

After having used a Nikon DSLR for over 2 years already, I seriously doubt I could be persuaded to switch camps.... there's something oh-so-wonderful about Nikon cameras!
Sell your 500d and 18-135. I doubt you need the range anyway, hor?
Get D90 + Nikkor 10-24 + 17-55/2.8 (if you feel rich) or Tamron 17-50/2.8 (not so rich). Need more reach? Get 70-300VR or 70-200/2.8 VRII....

I was considering a Canon or a Nikon switch from Sony.
I went with Nikon because:
1) I was looking at D90 or 550D and D90 was way better than the 550D. I don't need the megapixels nor the video. The noise of D90 was better than 550D. The grip of D90 feels like a camera's, while the 550D's feels like a toy (imho).
2) Nikon doesn't have a distinctive lenses range. They don't market their products with fanciful names or rubber bands. This is pretty personal actually but I don't like it when these companies segregate their consumers into something like that and classify their lenses into L lenses or CZ lenses.

Even though D90 is externally plastic... the feel certainly doesn't convince one that it is so. The build is SOOOO compact and solid, fits in your hands as if it feels right at home... and it oooozes out radioactively dark....rich... hot... pixels... I dunno... I truly think it's a force to reckon with... Truly dark.... :devil:

That's only the D80/D90 range and above. I have held a D70s before and the grip was (imo) better than the D90's one.
It definitely feels solid.

jryckw, stick with your 500D. Nobody obtains a Slash Custom Les Paul Gold Top Guitar and expects to immediately play like Slash.
at your stage of experience "upgrading" to Nikon D90 will offer no major improvement to your pictures. Please save your money, and instead spend more time practising and learning first.
It is better you ask how to achieve a certain effect with your existing camera. You have not explored the limits of its capabilities yet.

Been using it for a year and still has no idea where to do shooting menu is almost an impossible thing. Haven't reach the limitations of your 500D yet, so don't really bother about upgrading to D90. Read up your user manual and learn the functions of your camera first instead.

Agreed, in reality... 50D is a lot closer to D90 than 500D... not exactly level either...

btw just purchased a copy of Digital Camera magazine, the supposed "definitive guide to SLR photography", and they had a mega-test of all the mid-range DSLRs.
