500D to Nikon D90? shall i?

errr if thts the case then no one would want to buy the 500d alr rite so its down to one's preferences. You have to consider the grip, the buttons and the controls before deciding whether to upgrade or not.

Why change systems ?

Nikon Lenses are overall more expensive than Canon.

500D to D90, I would say not much difference, just the second LCD on the top beside the shutter release button, a little rigid feeling on the body.

For me, I'm using the 550D, video is good, body wise got quite a platic feeling, thus I would consider the 7D to upgrade.

Well, I guess TS, don't upgrade to a something which don't increase much of your features.

Upgrade to some which u might never want to upgrade anymore, like the 5D, 1Ds, D700, D3.

From the posts I see from TS, he did not ultilize the picture stlye, and I guess a high chance that he is shooting in jpg format. Thus White Balance wise, he don't really look into it further about what raw can do. Do he knows what can a gray card do to help ?

So, bottomline is TS, to maximize 100% out of your 500D Body, then upgrade to some better bodies like the 7D.

Not just because of peer pressure or some thinking that make you change to D90, different system. Think Twice ya,

Have Fun !

Some of my school friends laughed at me, they say I'm still using the bloody sucky kit lens and the cheapo prime, getting into an argument or even a fight may not help,

They kept silence the minute I show them my shots, which in front of most of my friends, they felt embaraased which they carry 5Ds.

Camera equipment = 10%

Photographer , good composition, good setttings = 90%

Ok.

I was considering a Canon or a Nikon switch from Sony.

I went with Nikon because:

1) I was looking at D90 or 550D and D90 was way better than the 550D. I don't need the megapixels nor the video. The noise of D90 was better than 550D. The grip of D90 feels like a camera's, while the 550D's feels like a toy (imho).

2) Nikon doesn't have a distinctive lenses range. They don't market their products with fanciful names or rubber bands. This is pretty personal actually but I don't like it when these companies segregate their consumers into something like that and classify their lenses into L lenses or CZ lenses.
MTL, I just switch from canon 400D to nikon D90, the feels when you grip the camera is totally different.
Flip thru the manual... Wow... So many features, really need times to digest.
Old?? Ya, it is old but so what?? Haha, with the price you can get D90 now, I dun think you can get any other brand of camera can come near to it...

Am contemplating this two pieces now... Can my SLR lens from Canon be used on 550D ?
That's my only concern...retired on SLR...coming over to DSLR...;p

apologies, but y is Nikon considered the dark side ?

apologies, but y is Nikon considered the dark side ?

Becoz... Darth Vader is the Chairman of Nikon Corp... :what: ??

Sorry, sorry, that's just the inner force speaking out of me... :embrass:

Nope, coz most of the Nikon DSLRs are black and most of the Lenses too (I don't know why they even bother with silver or creamy coloured ones... silly testing of the market no doubt...:bsmilie:)...but so far all BLACK - hence the dark side... If I'm not wrong there is a limited silver edition of one or two of the older camera bodies... But glad they have returned to ALL-black...

Seriously???? You don't know a Nikon until you've fully tried it... And once you've tried and ABLE to harness it's dark energy (not talking about half-baked efforts)...there is no looking back...you simply *wave bye-bye* to other DSLR systems while you journeyed on....

Dear TS, was using a 500D with nikon picture style previosly. Maybe you should try loading some of the different picture styles first. Also, explore taking pics in RAW and use the utilities tat came with your camera. Post processing is an important skill to acquire as a photographer. Having said that, nikon does have better AF. So it's really your style of photography that will matter. And always buy lens for wat u need now. Getting the 17-40 is just ridiculous since u have the 18-135.

but hor... D700 feels even nicer in the hands. lagi more solid :)

btw just purchased a copy of Digital Camera magazine, the supposed "definitive guide to SLR photography", and they had a mega-test of all the mid-range DSLRs.
"Every camera in this test packs plenty of punch, but the Nikon D90 hits harder than its rivals"

"Simply put, the D90 is a great photographer's camera that feels great and handles beautifully"

Should be lah. I have not held a D700 before. Assuming that the build is better than D200's, then it's freaking solid. :)

Yes. It's freaking cheap now. I don't see why I should wait for the replacement either. It's good enough already.

Hi Experts,

I'm so confused!! I'm currently using a 500D + 18-135mm lens, m looking to upgrade my camera, either going for the Lens or should i upgrade to a Nikon D90? where by i still find nikon's pictures colors r more stronger compared to canon as canon pictures r just sharper den nikon.. can i have some comments for this move?

1 more qns... Nikon Lens dont go with any Nikon camera like Canon Lens goes with any camera...m i right wif this?

Hi jryckw, I am no expert here but really enjoy the hobby and fooling around camera gear.

Before my person opinion, we need to look at some key differences and facts between 500D and D90:

Sensor 15 vs 12.3 mp
ISO handling 100-3200 vs 200-3200, expandable to 100-12800 vs 100-6400
Video Full HD 1080p vs HD 720p
AF points 9 vs 11
High speed continuous 3.5fps vs 4.5fps
Image processing 14bit vs 12bit

So much about listing the specification, having tried out both cameras before I don’t see D90 is much of an upgrade from 500D ???, whether they are even on par it is really very subjective. You get very different answers from a Nikon fan vs a Canon fan, and all will claim they are indifference in their opinion. I think both are good cameras and the argument go on and on until the cow come home whether they are on par or one is higher than the other, many Nikon fans like to think D90 is a tag higher and it is the same as my D700 friend have always religiously try to convince me that D700 is a knot higher than 5D Mark II ;) That make me appreciate my 5D better :D :D

Personally, if you are looking for an upgrade and change of brand then you should be looking at Nikon D300s not D90, go try out at the shop and if you are convince D90 is better or an upgrade?? than go for it. I don’t think it is technical spec or IQ here, something like a acquired taste like Apple Mac and iPhone fans, people just like to think Nikon is better and want to buy Nikon and there is nothing wrong with that as I like Canon, Nikon and Pentax but preferred Canon as I like the picture produced by Canon after all the features and spec.

You need to look at the overall package as you are buying into the system not just the camera body, i.e. the lenses that meet your needs. And once you committed enough gears, then the camera body upgrade path is pretty important to protect your investment.

I got no idea. You should ask the Canon people. :)

10% and 90% abit too lobsided la... should be abit more than 10% la... haha.. but i agree with the concept~!!

I also using chepo prime.. hahaha..:thumbsup:

Please refrain from cross posting the same topic across multiple sub forums, thanks. Thread merged.

what im saying is i realised nikon gives a better colour.. more colour..more strong... which i like... whereby canon give a more brighter or red/pink color to my photos.. m i right?

can we assume you have used both cameras and taken considerable amount of images to compare, and decided that you like Nikon's colour better, or you're just comparing with other people's images taken with Nikon camera?

You must be studying in a pretty rich school then.

Hmm I also think 10% is too lobsided. I would give 30% to camera equipment. There is a reason why people use huge tele lenses with dslr to do birding, and not a prosumer that reaches 460mm (35mm format)...

To TS, I'm a Nikon user, I try to give a very unbiased view... D90 is an upgrade from 500D, but only a small upgrade. There are more features and slightly better performance in D90 to justify the higher price.

But, as of now, I think you have yet to understand how to full utilise any dslr on your hands. So if you change from 500D to D90 or to D3 for that matter, you won't see any improvement in your pictures. You'll need to shoot more, read more and learn more.

the August copy of Digital Camera magazine? i picked up one myself only yesterday, and one of the main reasons was coz a D90 was featured, and it topped against stiff competition from the other brands. so TS, come over to the dark side... :bsmilie:

500D got NIKON picture style?? :dunno:

That's only the D80/D90 range and above. I have held a D70s before and the grip was (imo) better than the D90's one.

It definitely feels solid.

The only reason you feel that way is because they use a softer rubber material on the grips compared to the D80/90. It is the same grip material found on the D100.
