450D 18-55mm Kit lens - soft pictures?

Shah will need your help in this.

Shah, for the focus thing, I usually have single AP at the middle by default. Easier for me when I shoot. Unless necessary, i seldom touch the AP. But of course, this depends on each person.

pics are out of focus. getting a new lens will not yield different results. 18-55mm IS can still produce sharp pics.
improve and understand your shooting style first before buying a new lens.

posting the EXIFs of your pics can help in the analysis also.

PS, don't ever jump into conlcusions when someone says you need a new lens without even seeing your sample pics and other info.

haha...thanx for ur concern..actually i am intending to get a new lens as i find that the current lens isn`t wide enuff and that extra zoom will be useful for me...

i am just wondering if the kit lens is naturally soft or issit supposed to be sharp and provide good IQ...i tried finding reviews about this lens but cant seem to find any...

Will try posting EXIF info once i noe how..lol...

Yeap I think this lens has been doing great for me as far as it can go. We do not have the "L"uxury.

Lovely shot you have there, Ryan. With that shutter speed, mine is definitely doing blur.

Yeap...the lens has been doing great for me too...except that its nt wide enuff...

As for the focus, mine is on auto select...mayb i should try the centre one...

Btw, for the temple set, i used a small aperture for most of the scenes and long exposures...ISO was low to prevent and image grains from forming.

For my other picstures which can be seen at the other multiply albums, the pictures are sharper but still abit soft but not to a bothering extend...

I always have it as the centre cos is easier for me. to each his/her own style , I guess.

I did a temple before using the same lens. Must practise more on the steadiness. Wont be that soft. U can try taking those again to clear the OOF issue.

U mentioned Kit lens not wide enough and dont zoom enough. Correct me if I am wrong, either it is too ex, or if it is affordable, the build is so-so. What do you shoot most then you can pinpoint on what lens to buy =D BBB!

Looking at the EXIF info of the pics you posted, the shutter range from 1/6s to as long as 1s, I think with IS also hard to keep the images sharp, even more so when your subjects are quite close.

for the temple pics, i am using a tripod for those extra long shutter...i tried it myself and the lowest shutter i can go handheld with is 1/10th...

I like to take events and sometime i`m too close to my subject till i can frame them in...and stepping a step or 2 backwards is reallie not an option as people would jus stand in front of me or there is no space to move back..haha

Anyway, nice pics sis pixie...

Hmm.. In that case, you should use manual focus then. ;)

How wide are you intending to go? That's the question you need to ask yourself b4 splashing your $$. My friend is using the 17-85mm and to him, it's wide enough and the best part is that lens is sharp and fast.

Then again, if you are looking at just wide-angle, then you should look at those prime wide-angle lenses. :)

Ultimately, you have to make a choice and dun just BBB.

most of the time i use manual except for when its reallie dark when even i cant see a thing...that was the case for the off focused bottles in one of the pics...

As for wide angle, i`m eyeing the Sigma 17-70mm..Not looking at those super wide angle lenses...

hmm i used to have the same set up of 18-55 and 450D but the images were pretty ok.. compared to your shots of the altar etc, it seems that your pictures are out of focus rather than soft? You mentioned you were on manual focus, is it coz you were really close to the subject and is shorter than the minimum focussing distance for the 18-55? i think if you're closer than the minimal focussing distance your lens allow, even if you switch to MF to focus, your images will still be OOF. Just my 2 cents worth.

I am also a new user of 450D with the 18-55 kit lens.

Below are some of the shots I have taken. Personally, I don't think that it produces soft pictures. Maybe I am not that "picky"? ;p

As for your consideration of lens i find it quite strange... I wouldnt think that 1mm would do alot of difference for the Wide Angle side. Is it really worth the extra $$ and an extra overlapping lens ?

Your pictures ARE sharp..haha..i haf a photo of the city skyline too and its soft still

Thanks Shah. Yeah I also agree 1mm not much difference. I was thinking of like 10-22 type of wide range when you mentioned wide. And your zoom of 70.., borrow, steal , beg from frens to try out those lens before u invest will be a good idea too. But from the looks, maybe try to master well the current kit lens u have since if you are looking for that range, Kit fits well too =D

FVTPL: great shots u have! Barage has a nice angle for Flyer and bridge!

the first shot is on a tripod, while the second is handheld. maybe army did a good job in training me to have steady hands. ;)

even if you are to get the 17-70, i believe your images will still come out 'soft'. and also the different is only 1, you can easily take a few steps behind to cover that.

maybe you should use the middle AF point, use AF instead of MF and see if your photos are still 'soft'

i came to this conclusion when i realised that the normal 18mm wouldnt fir i what i want to take...i am also worried that a fish eye lens would be overy killl and the price is unaffordable for me at the moment...

My recommendation is to get a batt grip for ya 450D as it will give you better grip and lessen the Handshake Effect. At least for me, it helps when i am using at 1/10s. In love with my grip now and it never leave my cam.

yeah, i will still be trying out my current lense...wun be getting a new lense fast cos i`m jus starting work tml and my pay is even lesser then the 17-70mm...lol

as for the autofocus point..usually i use manual focus unless i am taking action shorts like dragon dance performances

One question: When i manually focus my subjects, i usually zoom into my subject at 55mm, focus then zoom out till how i want it to be....issit wrong? could it be the cause of the softness? thanx

Battery grip dont work for me though. =(

Shah, with all these comments I think u have to take a good shot for us to see soon! LOL =D
