Dude, the 50mm f/1.8 is a lens that's made in Malaysia. Never stopped me, nor most other users here, from getting good images out of it.
yes, find first the limits of the kit lens, this one taken with it also.

No offence intended, but the image really isn't much to show in the way of sharpness. It looks like there is a fair bit of softness.
I managed to dig an old close-up shot with the 40D and 18-55 IS kit lens, handheld. Not too sure about the exposure settings, 'cause it was taken a long time ago. I'd say the kit lens is really a lens with very good resolving power. You have to work it a little, because it is a little limiting, but when you know what you're doing, and given not-to-trying conditions, you'll get results that are definitely decent at least.
