Metz have it's own tech for wireless flash.
Can the on-camera flash be used as master with these 3rd party flashes in CLS mode?
So, third party flashes with SB-600/SB-800 functionality is non-existent. ;p

you can always buy wireless trigger from ebay. so "CLS" is not a problem for 3rd party flash. You want u also can buy canon flash, but in that case you use it solely for "CLS".

Don't confuse CLS with normal slave flash. The are very different.

Metz 58 AF1-N is compatible to Nikon's AWS (another name for CLS) according to it's manual. The 58 AF1-N when mounted on the camera and acts as master can control upto to 3 groups (A, B & C).
The manual however did not mention anything about Commander mode using the built flash to trigger Metz 58 AF1-N flash..
Well, 3rd. party flash looks good enough in AWS arena I must say, and better than Nikon in other ways too... it has a secondary reflector which Nikon does not.
I bought one in a jiffy just for the secondary reflector.

I don't know retail, I got issues with previous flash and got it direct from distributor at special price.

Just tested. Set D80 as Commander and Metz 58AF1-N was set to Group A Channel 1 and was successfully AWS triggered. Wow, looks like Metz 58 AF1-N is CLS/AWS compatible.
Didn't try on D200 as I just assume it will be the same result and also because had to rush out the door, wifey waiting. :bsmilie:

so is the Metz flash really good:think: I tot of getting 1 if is good. But the price seems to be more ex then SB-800, then y it commands such price?
The colour temperature for Metz flashes is slightly warmer, so skin tones looks nicer.

Was at SLS this morning, happen to walk in at AP and saw they had new shipment of SB600/400, plenty in stock.
Bought from AP one SB600 and tested with Metz 58 AF1-N. Metz was set as Master and it was able to AWS trigger SB600 on Group A Channel 3.
So far, this Metz is looking good. Build quality was not as sturdy though other than that, I don't have any issues.

so is it a better flash than sb800?
You can't base "better" on one quality. You've got to look at any product from a holistic point of view.
