3rd party 1D series battery

i'll be heading over soon!

jealous! many times when I'm idling,
I sit here
and remember all the good-times!!!!

ahhh
such fun times...
this time last year.... I was watching the crowds gather together in Reading for the festival!

Hi Bros, i have check with East Gear and they have in stock Lithium NP-E3 battery for 1D mk1 and mk2 bodies. Per piece is $89:D

Has anyone tried this?

Yes this Lithium NP-E3 is meant for 1D,1Ds,1Dmk2,1Dsmk2 and 1Dmk2n. there are people using it already.

Dropped by today. Only NiMH battery available. Guy at the shop said there was no such thing as a lithium ion version.

I called Nelson at Camera Workshop on Monday (4 days back) .... he read the label over the phone to me "Npe3..hmmm Leeteehum Ai-on batterly" but he did say it works on 1ds mk II and cannot be used on 1ds mk I

I find too much conflicting comments .... some say the Lithium can be used on 1ds some say cannot...any actual users care to comment?

at that price, it should be Ni-MH

Lithium version should be using a different charger, you can't use the same Ni-MH charger to charge a Lithium battery! The refresh function will kill the Lithium battery inside

1D and 1D2 are great body, I cant think of good reason to upgrade mine.

I will be getting someone to fabricate a few Lithium version of NP-E3 for me, he has been doing this for 2 years and his batteries can easily last 2200-2400 shots, that's 4 times higher than original battery.

Lithium version of NP-E3 will be much lighter, around 180g vs 300g for original.

Just got my hand on the Lithium NP-E3, didn't know 100g will make so much different.

Love the custom-made battery charger too, it is just slightly bigger than my nokia phone charger.

If each charge can really last 2000 shots, I think I can only report the battery life a month later :D

Wai I am interested in this. Since you're getting it custom made would it be cheaper if you do it in larger numbers? Any chance of consolidating a bulk order?

Me too, count me in if there is a GB. By the way, Wai, can give us a pic?

Mine was fabricated from my old NP-E3, so the build and locking mechanism is as good as original, except that it is lighter by 100+g.

I also bought a new one for my friend, the packaging is similar to those OEM battery. The fitting is tight, better than other OEM NP-E3 that i bought in the past.

Wonder how he seal the battery so nicely, i tried fabricated my own NP-E3 with AA batteries but failed :embrass:

Left : Lithium NP-E3 in OEM packaging. Right : Lithium NP-E3 fabricated from original
Note the charging connector is different from original.

I love the battery charger most, it works for 100-240V, great for travelling.

There is a LED at the corner of the charger, red = charging, green = fully charged. Charging will take around 2.5hrs, and it will auto cut-off. No refresh function as it is not necessary for Lithium battery

Wai, thanks for sharing!
how much does it cost u to mod the batt and fabricate the charger?

i don't think so, batteries can't send by post, i can only hand carry when I am back from oversea, and I don't want to pay for excess baggage, which will be like $25/kg

not cheap, about $130 and have not include shipping back and fro

S$130 for battery alone is cheaper than a brand new NP-E3, in my opinion, a bargain. Unless it is USD130. Even then, a fair price given the extra capacity and 'maintenance free' aspect of Li Ion batteries. How much for the charger? Can they sell modded ones, that is, without having to send in our old battery packs, save postage one way.

Do keep us updated on the performance of this Li Ion. TQ

S$130 including charger.

Yes, they sell modded one (the one of the left in the photo), but it is in OEM packaging.

If you want original packaging, I will need to send in your old NP-E3, otherwise where they get the casing from?

BTW, the company is specialized in making Lithium batteries for portable devices, so they have proper equipment and knowledge in this area.
