3rd party 1D series battery

Strange enough, this morning I called Eastgear, they are still selling at S$89/- per piece.

But I got mine at Orient Photo "Camera Devices" CDNP-E3 for S$60/- apiece. Bought 2 @ S$115/- with the 6 mths warranty.

NOw no worries on my 1Dmk2 no battery :)

For Ni-MH one, I got mine at as low as S$20+ here.

However, I never get to use it ever since I got my Lithium NP-E3 ;p

Regretted buying the Ni-MH one cos they are so heavy and the Canon charger is so bulky.

Weight and battery life is priority for me since I travel often, so I need to carry less and shoot more.

Hi Wai,

May I know what is 1D2 max input Vdc or did your friend use any PWM regulator to regulate the Li-Ion pack output to 12Vdc (typ)?

I'm interest in DIY one myself and I'm not sure if the camera will work with 3.7Vx3 = 11.1V (nominal) at load or 12.9V fully charged.

Can you advise what's is the diameter of the Li-Ion cell you are using as I can only get the dia 18mm cell which is abit too big and I have to remove the batt. pack cover with some cut of plastic.

Thanks for your advice in advance,

Rgds,

I still have extra 2 sets of Lithium NP-E3 with me, to the CSer who PMed me earlier, please PM me again as I have lost your contact after CS server down last week.

Thanks!

if you have used 1-series long enough, you will realize that the AF will be slower and WB will be less consistent when the battery is weak, so 11.1V will be way too low.

I have confirmed with him that it is 3.7V*4, but please be very sure of what you are doing, because if you did not design the protection circuit properly, you are going to burn your 1D

Was using 3rd party (2 diff brands) batteries for both my 5Dmk1 and 20D. Even though I got them later than my OEM batteries, one of the brand has already kaput after less than a year, the other brand is inconsistent in holding charge and unable to charge properly also.

Phottix I got it from here while the other brand I got it from Orient photo.

Will never ever get 3rd party batteries again... :thumbsd:

Original 5D and 20D batteries are relatively cheap compare to NP-E3 for the older 1-series.

Guess you have not feel the pain of paying $300 for original NP-E3 and $100 for 3rd party back in those days.

That's why we are so desperately looking for alternatives.

I have owned more than 10 pcs of OEM Ni-MH NP-E3 and original Ni-MH NP-E3. The OEM Ni-MH are great for 3 mths only, after which the capacity will drop and become unusable in 6-9 mths.

On the other hand, battery life of original Ni-MH is average, but it can last me 1-1.5 years. In fact, I still have 2 original Ni-MH that still works.

It is already 8 mths since I have been using Lithium NP-E3, and the capacity still as good as new. :)

thanks for the battery info so 4*3.7V =14.8V typ (or 4*4.2V = 17.2V fully charged) should be too high for the 1D, so I believe the battery pack is PWM voltage regulated and any idea what is the Vout set eg., 12V, +/- 5%?

I have no concern on the charging protection as I can always have contant volt and max current limit designed in my charger.

Also what is the battery dia or capacity with your modified batt pack?

thanks in advance.

hmm...I don't know but if you've already invested so much in your camera, why are you using a third party battery?

1. original NP-E3 is heavy and expensive
2. due to the nature of Ni-MH and high internal resistance, the battery will not able to "release" all the stored power, as much as 50% of the stored capacity is wasted
3. the original NP-E3 charger is bulky!
4. There is a refresh function on the original charger to "discharge" the NP-E3 completely before charging (due to memory effect)
5. Original NP-E3 only comes in Ni-MH cell, only 1DIII and 1DsIII onwards use Lithium batteries.

Why Lithium NP-E3
1. lighter by half, cheaper by half
2. Lithium battery has larger usable capacity, twice as much shots per charge
3. Lithium NP-E3 charger is about the size of my handphone charger
4. NO memory effect for Lithium, can re-charge and use anytime
5. Lithium NP-E3 gives a new life to 1-series because it is now lighter with longer battery life.

if no one contacts u can i get 1pc?

i tot you are in UK using the OEM NP-E3? Anyway, all the batt are sold already
oh...nvm then..i thought it if there's a lighter option i might try it out..would be back in sgp this summer and back to the newsroom so a batt with higher capacity might be a plus

Mine was fabricated from my old NP-E3, so the build and locking mechanism is as good as original, except that it is lighter by 100+g.

I also bought a new one for my friend, the packaging is similar to those OEM battery. The fitting is tight, better than other OEM NP-E3 that i bought in the past.

Wonder how he seal the battery so nicely, i tried fabricated my own NP-E3 with AA batteries but failed :embrass:

Left : Lithium NP-E3 in OEM packaging. Right : Lithium NP-E3 fabricated from original
Note the charging connector is different from original.

I love the battery charger most, it works for 100-240V, great for travelling.

There is a LED at the corner of the charger, red = charging, green = fully charged. Charging will take around 2.5hrs, and it will auto cut-off. No refresh function as it is not necessary for Lithium battery

Hi,

I sent you a PM regarding this product in response to your reply PM to me.
Sent five days ago. Still awaiting a reply.

Perhaps, emailing me would be best (see my PM) as that is quicker/more efficient.

Thanks in advance.

Still have a LiIon NP-E3 lying around... anyone interested?
