i would want to continue this. lets shoot the eclipse and show the result ok?
Hi,
I'm not saying that you cannot photograph the Sun using the ND filter (do at your own risk). I'm saying that base on various resource I found, ND filter are not safe to be use for looking at the Sun using your eye.

Our eye are very precious especially to photographer, so be very careful and take all the necessary safety precaution... no harm to be a bit "kiasi" :)

By the way, I just check the price for the A4 size Thousand Oaks Solar Filter, it's S$29. Much cheaper than I thought.

Have a nice day.

S$29? No discussion, I'm not gambling about my health and eyesight. Thanks for that update!

Just got a sheet too. Certainly worth it, plus makes it easier to take the photo, I'm certain.

let just shoot this. it will be a good practice for the full one this year.

Anyone got extra/leftover Thousand Oaks solar filter to sell, don't need an A4 size, half of it will do.

Please do not under-estimate the amount of UV and IR that is emitting from the sun. It may be light years away, but the power is enough to burn u, less alone your precious eyes. If you don't see it, doesn't mean it is not there. :)

I've got those eclipse viewing glasses, silver film ones.

Where to get those and how much?
Any where else besides science centre? I live in the East and science centre is... faaaaaaaar......

let just shoot this. it will be a good practice for the full one this year.

Full one? There will also be a full one this year?
When will that be? :dunno:

But the total eclipse is not visible in Singapore... always the case :(

Have a nice day.

Hi,
Yes, there is a total solar eclipse during 22 Jul 2009, but Singapore cannot see the actual total solar eclipse, only partial solar eclipse during that time.

Did you see the Magnitude with asterisk column in the "Solar Eclipses Visible in Singapore between 1999 and 2031" table in the Science Centre page you provided?? The value for that column is 0.06. The description for that column (at the bottom of the table) is "* Magnitude is defined as the fraction of the Sun's diameter covered by the disc of the Moon at middle eclipse as seen in Singapore." This mean that we can only see 6% of the Sun diameter cover by the Moon during the eclipse as seen in Singapore...

If I'm not wrong, the last total solar eclipse visible in Singapore is 04 Mar 1821 and the next one will be 05 Jul 2168. There are some very near total (> 90%) solar eclipse in between.

Hope the sky will be clear during the solar eclipse.

Have a nice day.

lol. i guess you r right. let show our picture for this eclipse. :) ok?

Hmm...I just looked up the solar filter, and it seems that the company name's supposed to be Thousand Oaks. Any idea why the black polymer has a Thousand Oak label, and looks quite different from the Thousand Oaks site images? If it's an imitation, I'd be concerned about its transmittance properties.

Err... what do you mean?? Which image is different??

Have a nice day.

well, i suppose using the ND filters with live view should be safe for our eyes ... right?

Weixing, your picture shows a "Thousand Oak" black polymer sheet. I'm not sure if the company would misspell their own name like that. From what I found online, Thousand Oaks solar films seem to look more like this:

Of course, I've never seen the real thing on the Thousand Oaks site, so I'm not sure which is real or if both are.
