16-85VR.. here's why (and vs 18-200VR!)

OT a bit, issit that why ppl get the 70-200VR for its fast aperture, and it is precisely this reason that the 70-200 is price that high?

Sorry no offence.. just that the reason for getting the 70-200VR is to use its faster aperture for capturing action... and if I want to take a f8 all the time.. IMHO.. why would I want to spend over thousands to get the 70-200VR where a 55-200VR is only a fraction of the cost.

The justifications for a comparision at f8 btw the 18-200 and 70-200 is not compelling enough.

Mostly, yes the aperture

But the build quality and glass employed are different
It is one of the sharpest zoom, and highly corrected for distortion. I can tell u that the 18-200 has alot more distortion at its ends. The zoom of the 70-200 is more dampened and not prone to zoom creep of the 18-200.

But that being said, if u do not need the wider aperture and do not mind the above, then of course the justification is less.

the 16-85mm vr juz got reviewed in SLRgear. seems like a really good lens. really considering swapping my 18-200 vr for this.

----------------:
- 16-85VR - better optically in almost every aspect, updated VR, extra 2mm at wide is more useful than 86-200 (on 18-200VR) for my "walk-around" / travel purpose...and I have a 70-300VR to combo it with for some occations

It's sometimes amazing to note the power of self psycho at work......

--the oportunity of 2mm wider (even then not very sure also) - beats the 86-200 tele, and the 'occassional' combo lugguage--.

Maybe there are other reasons for the 16-85. but this one - beat me!

If wide is important: I would have taken a 12-14 or 10-... or 11-.. plus 18-200. same 2 combo, but the covered range will ..........................

Huh?! self psycho? This is simply a "preference" dude!

Read carefully, I said "more useful", not "important". It's a relative term!

Beat me!

the 2 mm could just be more useful in real world shooting. but still, the 18-200mm takes away a need for another lens (tele) but the 16-85mm do not. i think wat is really attractive about it is its reported sharpness even wide open.

Well.. personally if I am out to buy a lens for one size fits all.. I think I would have got the 18-200.. but becos I already own a 70-300mm and sold away my 18-55mm the next in line was either a 18-70mm or this 16-85mm... and between these two.. I still prefer the focal length covera of the 16-85mm.

Sorry, for not paying attention to the meaning on the choice of words used.

Glad to note it was your considered purchase. I'm sure you will continue to discover more usefulness of this lens as you shoot. Have fun and cheers.

show us some of your pictures that you are happy with using the 16-85mm? we are in suspense you know?

i got the 16-85 over th 18-200 cos lens creep bothers mi...
yes,i'm kinda fussy, but for walk ard purpose,i prefer a sightly lighter setup.
d80 with 16-85 n sb600

wat is creep?? :dunno:

Creep is when the lens move on its own due to its weight when you point the lens straight up or down. The 18-200mm lens do creep and its well documented, and its something you get used to and be aware of before you buy it, else it will be another factor to persuade you to bbb..

I've taken thousands of shots with the 18-200 and noticed the creep only 1-3 times. So what. It hasn't stopped me from enjoying this lens. And it's way more versatile than the 16-85.
Here's the new 18-200 Van Club :D:cool:

I agree. I have no problem with my 18-200mm lens too, and hardly noticed any creep too. Just that there are those who would use that as an excuse to bbb....not my problem really. Some of those other brand push-pull lens have very bad creep though.

Its about the only lens I have on my D50 most times. Else i would be using the 12-24. I really enjoy the versatility of the lens.

What's a Van club?...

To be frank.
I brought my 18-200 about a month back and has been on my cam eversince..
Never did notice the much mentioned creep. I even went to the extend of test it at different focal lengths.
Did nikon already solve it? Or is my lens spoilt? =( hahaha...

It develops with prolonged use.
Used mine for almost 6 mths. Was the main lens on my cambodia trip. Nil creeping yet

From some of the replies in this discussion, it seems to suggest that creep comes with the lens. =(
Okie, we'll see if it happens somewhere down the road.
