Maybe the D40 signals a transition towards the AFS lenses.
Maybe next higher end camera also support AFS only.
Its a move towards new technology ma.

Unlikely that they will totally give up the AF-D lenses by introducing AF-S only bodies... yet. Too many good AF-D lenses that are still in production and Nikonians are holding. I believed photographers wants to use their AF-D lenses has shunned the D40 for that reason. Anyway, D40 was targeted at new DSLR converts who do not have or have very small lens collection.

D40 is true for newbie. But the sales is important for Nikon cos it's cheap. They sell more D40 than D200 anywhere in the world. But now the sales are gone to Canon 400D or 350D because of price fight and wider range of lens selection. Maybe this is Nikon tactic to win back the customers????

Every forum also suggest the ppl to buy Canon and not Nikon, I think Nikon heard this thing already. Me too waiting for the 15 new lenses(if there's any).

D40 should out sell the D200 by now as D200 has been sold for a quite some time. not a fair comparison in the first place. with the recent consumer level dslrs getting smaller and smaller, something got to go in the camera, and that is the screw motor in the body. AFD would still be around for quite some time. especially with the rumoured release of the D3X as FF. We shall see what happens this year or next.

If nikon wanted to attract ppl back to the d40 wouldn't it be cheaper to put the motor back in to the d40? If nikon can sell an AFS 55-200 for less than $400 that means the motor can't cost that much.... this as compared to putting an AF-S into every lens and having to redesign every lens... faster and cheaper to just redesign 1 camera and charge $50 more....

unless of course nikon wants to use the d40 to tempt people in to nikon system then charge them a bomb for the AF-S lenses
