11th May - new lenses

Christ if that really happened I'd get two copies of every single current production lens and camera. 1 copy to keep, the other to sell NIB for close to MSRP

Not bad.. 2 for the price of 1. ;p

15 new lenses? That is a surprise, considering how badly the Thailand factory is struggling to put out enough copies of the 18-200 VR lens worldwide.

I'd thought everyone would be used to nikon's style by now.
Announce way ahead of time :P
In any case , the Thai factory doesn't make primes at all AFAIK. Mostly consumer zooms.

And I'd say it's been way overdue ! Last prime lens IIRC was 7 years ago , the $$$ AF14/2.8. I'd guess . I suppose people can guess what are coming out , given the severe gaps in the line up that have been "missing" for so long.

12 / 2.8 ?
13 / 4 DX ? Revive the old 13/5.6 ?
28 / 1.4 ? Sigma is doing well with their 30 1.4 Digital
35 / 1.4 ?
50 / 1.2 ?
85 / 1.2 ?
300 2.8 DX VR2 ?

I sure hope they whip up several more wides. It's one of the few areas Nikon is truly good at.

They don't need to stick SWM motors into the existing line-up of primes... they need to make them cheaper.

With new lens, old lens will be cheaper.;)

70-200/4VR...then its time to sell 70-200/2.8. getting older mean lens gets heavier.

135/2 r 2.8 prime W/O DC would be good.

w digital...DC not so important liao. just shoot sharp image and ps later.

My speculations:

AF-S 17-55 f/2.8 DX VR
AF-S 55-150 f/2.8 DX VR
AF-S 35mm f/1.8 DX
AF-S 50mm f/1.8
AF-S 85mm f/1.4 ED (f/1.2 or DC will be a huge plus)

BC ;)

I hope they can make the AF-S 35/1.8DX to be dirt cheap like the existing 50/1.8. ;p

this is my hope too...and make it smaller and lighter as well. :)

35f2 from $600 -> $170 ermmm...i hope so too, but somehow i dun tink it's gonna ever happen...

if it does happen i'll be the 1st one in line to get it..haha!

18-200 2.8 should be very heavy!

i'm no engineering expert, a 12-200VR f/2.8? heh

Primes with SWM motor in them.... oooh.... sexy....

for those who are dreaming of the 12-200mm F2.8 VR or the 18-200 F2.8 VR, i shudder to think of the size & weight of the lens.

imagine how large the front element has to be.

also the weight of the lens will be a major turn off.
unlikely one can shoot handheld without the aid of a monopod or tripod.

it will only remain a fantasy...

haha, thats true, guess we should fantasize something more realistic... maybe a 12-70mm f/2.8 VR will be fine by me

It is not that simple. This will involve a total redesign of the primes because in order to use SWM, the lens will have to be IF, ie, internal focusing. You just can't stick a SWM into an old helical focusing lens and expect it to work.

why does everyone want the primes to go AF-S? they already have such large apertures, there's hardly any delay in focusing. moreover, other than IQ i thought the advantage of primes were size and weight.

not only will there need to be a redesign (read - increased cost because of R&D), but there's an over-reliance on the SWM motor. AF-S motor spoil = MF lens.

to me at least, the real need for almost instant focusing is in the longer telephotos which sports photogs use. the company will pay for the replacement SWM motor anyway.

you still call that realistic? with a starting focal length of 12mm and a 2.8 f stop, how big will the front element be? just look at the 12-24/4 and make another guess.
