my 14 days in Tibet

I thought that Potala Palace was shot to death and yet you have come up with some interesting compositions

Not a big fan of IR and don't even know how to shoot and process IR, so can't comment on the IR shot of the palace...

I am eagerly waiting for more landscapes :)

Its always wise to comment in hindsight... For #28, did you try a portrait composition (by placing the shoreline/horizon at the bottom third and shoving the rock/snow to a corner) ? I am a sucker for blue skies and the sky in #28 is simply too good to pass up :bsmilie:

haha, tks...that shot on Potala Palace was a random snap shot while waiting impatiently for the tour guide to finish his explanation.
As to #28, incidentally, i do have a portrait composition and had the rock/snow shoved to a corner (right side) and the shoreline/horizon between 1/2 and 2/3 to the bottom...hmm, somehow i didn't notice the potential of that...perhaps my exposure of that shot was off :) ok, i will go and see what i can salvage from that. tks for the comments :) and btw, i am also a sucker for blue skies .... haha

I am one who can endure freezing temperatures...be it in Arctic circle or Harbin in the deep of Winter. This place is nowhere as cold, at least not in May but the altitude makes everything difficult, even for photography ! You can take my words for that.

A few things to note about this place:
1. We stayed overnight in metal container-like rooms with no bath room facilities and no heating in the rooms. You are left with the blankets and your own heat packs.
2. Toilet is available for RMB 2.
3. The ‘hotel’ is also not on the electrical grid. Power is delivered to us by standalone generators during certain hours only.
4. The dogs didn’t seem to need any sleep. They barked through the whole night.
5. Compared to other places of similar altitude, this place is said to be extremely thin of oxygen (probably due to the total lack of trees)…even the ‘old birds’ drivers often get AMS when they come here with the tour groups.

My goodness.... unbelievable.
You have my respect, SK1968!

Haha. No lah, this is nothing according to some of the people on my group who have been to worse places. Personally I have been to worse places too but then I was younger and poorer. Not that I am much wealthier today but I am certainly older so I tend to complain more these days...haha

Wa so nice! Look so different from my trip. One thing remains the same, the dogs don't sleep at night hahaha...

It was the photos of your trip that made me even more determined to visit the place (I missed the chance to join your group back then)....the blue sky, perfect reflection of the snow capped mountains on the water surface...but I got this this time round because we were a little early. The ice is like neither here nor there, melted half way...haha

Those dogs are amazing, I wonder if they even sleep at all...

nice thread, you finally went there :)

Spring ! so full of life and greenery !

Really need to save up for another trip there ( outside of winter :P )

Tks.
Haha, you are itching again just less than 1 year ? :) If you ask me, Winter seems to offer better conditions compared to the time I went. At least the time you went seems to be less foggy. That is both seen from your photos as well as what the tour guide/drivers told me. For me, it will not be so soon, there are many other places to go :)

D2 (Monday, 9 May) This day we caught the flight from Chengdu to Nyingchi, a city south-east of Tibet and at about 2500m, ideal for acclimatization. In fact, this place is low enough that we didn’t feel any AMS at all. We also visited a very important temple in Nyingchi but no photography of the interior is allowed (same applies to all other Tibetan temples (though some may allow with a small fee in certain parts of the temple)). Here’s some scenary of this city (probably the Tibetan city that’s at the lowest altitude) which we stayed for 2 nights.

D7 (Saturday, 14 May) It is here that I got hit with AMS. Partially due to my blocked nose and partially due to the noisy dogs, I had very bad headache in the morning. Despite that, I thought it would be a pity if I had not made the 100+ m ascent to take in a bird-eye view of the lake. It turned out to be the most breathless journey of my life thus far….

Amazing set of pictures you have there. Was supposed to visit the place end June, but unfortunately trip has to be cancelled due to their 60th Anniversary celebrations. Too bad, can only admire the place from the pictures you have. Do post more.
