A-mount lenses has flange back distance (distance from lens mount to sensor) around 44mm. If you put the lens closer than that distance, you won't be able to focus to infinity. So, in order to have slim camera body, the lenses have to be totally redesigned. Thats why they have e mount. :)

i think if you want the more advanced video feature, get the 550d. otherwise, for photography only, 500d is more than enough while considering the price difference..

ive never tried the tamron personaly, but there is a video posted by someone in youtube showing tamron's af works very slow on sony.
