28mm or 35mm: What's the better lens and which would you take for general photography?

35mm. It has none of the "barrel" distortion, field curvature and vignetting of the 28 (&25). In fact, it ranks alongside my ZF macros in every aspect.

Quick shot from this morning :)

Thank you for your views onthe ZF 35/2.

Well, I opted for the 28 and received it yesterday. Shot about 60 frames and the lens is tack sharp from edge to edge and no distortion. What a beautiful lenses for my D300. I'm glad ;) I bought it and I know I made the right decision. Other 28 owners should comment on their lens...so far only those who own the 35 have which can be misleading by only hearing from them only.:nono:

A nice article (with pics ) of how Zeiss lenses are manufactured inside the Cosina factory.
http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/cda/lens_review/2008/08/21/9006.html

Let me attempt a short translation with my limited understanding of Japanese.
"Observing the manufacturing process at Cosina where the lenses are assembled inside the clean room, it is surprising the repeated number of inspection each lens goes through at the optical bench. The individual production and time required is a trademark of Zeiss. The precision of Zeiss lens making at Cosina makes it possible to say that quality surpasses the honest birth place of Zeiss in Germany. Seeing this Cosina manufacturing process makes it foolish to say Zeiss in Japan is not as good as made in Germany........................"

I can only go so far. My vocabulary ran out.

Since I haven't got the new ZF 18/3.5 i can't comments anything about this one.
therefore for now, I prefer ZF 28/2 :)
Unless I want to do some Micro-Wide Angle shoots, then I will go with ZF 25/2.8 ;p

thanks

hope you will have your 18mm very soon so that we can enjoy your wonderful pics

looking at all the sample pics - the 18/3.5 is truly amazing - i'm sure we'll see even more once digitalxd1 gets his.

There is a comparison between CZ 18mm and Nikon 24-70mm. Power man

http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=184878

small correction: it was CZ 18/3.5 vs nikon 14-24/2.8

it was a good effort at an objective test.

that said, there was never a doubt that a prime lens would outperform a zoom lens for clarity (sharpness, be it centre or corner) and accurate colour reproduction.

a bit of OT:
if anyone wants to try (and only because they already own one of these v expensive lenses), can compare (on a separate thread) with nikkor's MF 18/3.5 or AF 18/2.8 ----> although these 2 are old and actually flawed in their own way.

Hi, may I know does anyone have any idea how much the ZF 25mm f2, 28mm f2 and 85mm f1.4 is selling?

Thanks:)

Hello I'm new here and this is my first post. I've just purchased Zeiss ZF 35 f/2 to use on my Nikon D2x and D700. Though I've only had it for one day the images that it is rendering are remarkable! After having considered this lens for more than I year I finally decided to make the move and get one. I'm not disappointed in the least. This lens is remarkable. Now I've to decide which one should I purchase next.

Hi Tony!
welcome to the "silver ring lens" club ;p

Please post ur pic with ZF 35/2

Andree

i downgraded to silver ring aperture club :x

Downgraded mechanically, but upgraded optically.

Anyway, mechanical downgrade is good as there will be less moving parts, thus less wear and tear on your lenses. That's why manual focus lenses easily outlast most auto focus lenses.
