your thoughts on the new 5d?

i'm thinking of getting this or the 350D. i was bent on the 350D until today, when i saw the ad for the new 5D. the built in image stabiliser, ISO3200 and bigger viewfinder are all very very tempting. but i don't know much about minolta and its lenses. would appreciate it if you guys could help me with these questions

1) anyone knows what the estimated price will be when it is released here in spore?

2) anyone knows the price of the 18-200mm, and the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.7 KM lenses?

3) is it for sure that the 5D is made in malaysia?

putting your minolta biases aside, would you opt for the 5D or 350D?

thanks guys.

1) estimation of $1.5K with kit or thereabout (18-70)

2) 50 f/1.4 at $315 thereabout (verified just last week). http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=143577

3) yes. so what? electronics are going cheap and so will the manufacturing.

Minolta does not have as many lenses to choose unlike the more popular brands like Canon and Nikon, the 2 giants. I would defintely go for the 5D instead of the 350D. Why?
1. Anti-Shake. I don't need to buy IS lenses becos AS works with 90% of the lenses available!
2. The easy to use user interface. All the most commonly used functions or settings are easily found on the camera body itself. I don't need to press the menu button, scroll here and there just to find it.
The 5D interface resembles the DiMage A1 I have, and its just lovely!
8 megapixels? I don't need it but of course it good to have.

hey thanks man. but just to clarify...i thought some previewers commented that controls like the WB, ISO do not have their own buttons? they must be accessed through the function menu?

yeah...i agree with you that electronics are going cheap. don't flame me but...it's just like a psychological thing. made in japan > made in malaysia. know what i mean? does KM have any known mfg QC problems or such?

would you, in your opinion, find that hte lack of lens availability a problem? but i suppose KM would launch, in the near future, quite a few more digital lenses right?

oh by the way, how much would the 50mm f/1.7 and 18-200mm digital be? i'm trying to save money la. heh. if the 50mm f/1.7 is much cheaper than 1.4, i'll go for 1.7. less than half a stop diff only mah. and if they sell body alone, ill jsut go for 18-200mm lens. don't intend to go so pro yet la. heh.

thanks man for your reply. really appreciate it. :)

who said that? take a look at this photo and tell me what are these buttons for?
http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/cda/parts/image_for_link/26746-1920-3-2.html

Japanese do their work with pride even though its a minor thing, that's why the QC are a lot better but in the end it will cost a lot more! Malaysia, you know.

Minolta had basically covered from wide (17-35mm and now 11-18mm) to tele (600mm). We usually say the lack of lenses is because there's bascially no shops have Minolta lenses in stock where you can buy off the shelf. Now, this should improve as time goes by after the lauch of 5D and next year 9D. There'll be more SSM lenses available soon as well and my guess is together with the launch of 9D (full frame) and probably not DT.

Every where QC is the same lah...;p

Its depends on the user on how he takes care of his camera.

I think it's best to wait for a while after its release, when we can get more comprehensive reviews of the D5D. Whatever is discussed at the moment is nothing more than just mere speculation.

For all you know (objectively speaking), the D5D may turn out to be a really crap camera. Of course as a Minolta user, I certainly hope this won't be the case.

I'm just saying we're all very excited about the camera, but it's not much use asking for opinions about it when nobody has really used it yet. From the specs sheet, and past performances of previous models, we're just merely speculating. We may have read lots of previews about it, but do we really know how it performs on the field?

So therefore, at the present moment, it doesn't seem logical to make comparisons between the 350D and the D5D (unless you're purely comparing specs only).

(But frankly, I'm also expecting good things from the D5D)

Well, I'm not sure about KM specifically, but many Japanese electronics companies produce two series of products. One made in Japan, and the other somewhere else in Asia, and there IS a notable difference in quality. You'd pay more, but you really get what you pay for.

There are already previews out on the net...

Hi to all,

I think it is about time for me to purchase Digital SLR after having a good use of Dynax 7 for years. Dynax 5D is good start, I guess!

Anyway, can anyone tell me what are the disadvantages of using the old Minolta lenses on digital SLR body like Dynax 5D as compare to the new D lenses?

I don't think I've enough cash to migrate all my existing lenses to the D type.

Please advise.. thanks.

I've a mixed of D and non-D.. Frankly, I don't see a real advantage by "D" alone.. but the newer 28-75/2.8 and 17-35/2.8-4 are really a steal with their optical quality. All my older lenses work well with 7D too!

Thank you so much for your kind advice. At least, now for sure I know that I don't have to spend so much on lenses. BTW have you try with 2x teleplus or uniplus. Your comments, please.

is it just me, or is f2.8 KM glass that much cheaper than Nikon/Canon?

If you have been using Dynax 7, Dynax 7D might be a better choice for you rather than the Dynax 5D, but give both a try first and decide for yourself. I am sure both cameras handles differently...

just relate a scenario to you... when i was younger, my family got do sub con work so i understand abit...

actually most jap products are not made entirely in japan, most are just for the sake of the japan branding, they ship from other parts of the world, send to japan den do a slight firmware or modification then ship out as made in japan... and the interior is still about 90% not made in japan... maybe they wanna make it more valuable, they have a different batch of higher quality shipped to japan to get endorsed... but overall, have you noticed that if you buy in japan, most of the products are not made in Japan? Cos if you self made for own country use, the product lost its value, i forget about the whole terminology, but its like the value is created if the goods are imported... hence alot of made in china items in japan... than made in japan... or i could be wrong...
