YOG food issue again .....

I think the $387 million is just all a money game. One pocket into another pocket still within the system no harm.

See, Gov give money to make YOG happen. They award everything to local contractors that is within SG. Contractors give job to many ppl some local Talent than some FT. Than everyone make good decent $$.. So first of all they need to pay their dues, Tax, blah blah blah.. So Gov take back part of the amount already. Than PPL feeling rich start to spend like king have $$ start to buy things big car, big house basically big everything..... Ha ha ha... Here can take back some more from tax , COE, GST and some more ppl get a share of the sweet Pie (our Gov call this the spill over effect) .... Plus, every year more Tax can be collected from the big house and big car. This leads to increase in GDP.

So all and all is just a money game. But the flip side of this money game is things become more expansive. So all this will depends which side of the fence u are on.. If u are on the recieving side.... Huat Arh... If not than pray that u might get a share of the sweet pie. :)

Like I said, it is just a Matrix....

well..if it is so straight forward will be good for me. I will just keep the $ and spend it on my overseas trips..haha....no need pay all the tax etc you mentioned...

Bro, when u recieve ur income the first round already done (Income Tax). Than u spend on air ticket u will pay the next (Indirectly to all the ppl working here in sg and the company tax), plus the service u have recieve u pay some more.

Directly in directly sure have some amount going back sometimes without u knowing. :) If u keep money in the bank yah, the bank use ur money to fund their money spinning program also become part of the spill over effect...

Go overseas u sure buy better camera equipment when u have money, If u do it here before going there will be another. No way out 7% GST. :)

The attitude of Singaporeans towards sports is that it will not bring you far in life. Thus there is hardly any interest in professional sports. Even if programs were to be started in schools to cultivate sports, will many of us agree to our kids spending more time in sports than their studies ? Indeed, if it is the government's mandate to drum up interest in sports amongst the younger generation, then the 1st task is to drum up interest. Once u have interest, you can build facilities, hire coaches and what nots. Whats the point of hiring coaches, investing in programs and facilities first when nobody is interested in sports ?

Look at the threads here in CS, it mostly negative about YOG. Hardly is there a positive thread. We have won some medals, but i have yet to see any threads congratulating our athletes. Many expect government to do more for sports in this country, but as a people, what have we done to help in this direction. How many of us have actually gone to support our local athletes or for that matter offer a congratulatory note to the winners and their coaches through online forums like CS ? Many talk about the lack of support by the general public, thus the notion that schools are being "arm twisted" to attend and support. This is a direct by-product of the lack of support by the general public that the government has had to resort to the schools.

So by your last statement, since there is a lack of public support, the schools have to support it? Even if it means arm twisting the students who can't fight back? Even if it means stressing them so close to their exam? Look at it this way, that can don't bid for it, they can scale it back, they can turn to the civil service / army / police for manpower.

I think it is how this YOG was run, being over budget to the tune of $400 mil, forcing students to "volunteer", etc that got people piss off.

To produce world class athletes, you need nature, nurture & underlying ecosystem. With the right genes, u can produce stronger, faster and better athletes. Then there is nurture - training, conditioning, competition is what hones your skills and development from a mere athlete to a champion. Ecosystem - parent support, society support, economic incentives are some of the critical components here. Ask yourself, do they exist in Singapore, especially the latter 2 ?

The fact is, no Michael Phelps has emerged from Singapore ... even if u have a Michael born in Singapore, do u seriously think that he can be what he is today if he grew up in Singapore, with our present education system emphasizing academic excellence, our current sports programs and our economic system that does not reward athletes contribution ?

On a personal note, as a parent, if your kid shows early potential in a particular sport, are u prepared to commit to the grow him into a world champion, sacrificing study time for trainings and competition or u are going to dissuade him from pursuing sports but focus on his studies instead ? If your answer is to commit to growing him into a world champion, then i think you are perhaps an exception to many other parents here :)

Without the above, especially parents who are willing to take a chance and commit their children to be world class athletes, there is NO way that we can have the likes of Michale Phelps !

This I agreed, but even is there are parents who are willing to groom another Michale Phelps, what is the point? The gov themself will not support and die die he'll have to go NS. So how? If gov don't support how to tell parent to support?

God help us if the World Fair was held here in Singapore instead of Shanghai :bsmilie:

EVERY MAJOR EVENT the world has hosted over the last 20+ years has its public detractors due to their own reasons and agendas ..... South Africa, Beijing , Sydney, Athens etc etc etc

With the internet, the whining just got louder in volume

I am neutral to this whole issue - I am not partial or against any decision made with regards to YOG. As for my kids going to YOG, my impression is that they enjoyed themselves and they are happy to be part of the YOG experience. They just got to work harder to catch up.

In such a situation, i think the decision lies with the parents - and the parents will have to decide how to handle the situation considering all the pros and cons. There are parents who have made a decision to uproot and emigrate for the benefit of their children. For some, the decision has been a correct one whereas for others, it didnt turn out so well. End of day, neither society nor government cannot decide for u, only u can decide and u have to live with that decision. :):)

precisely, govt's policy has been all along academic excellence, elite grooming system.

now look at us and big country like china, india, usa etc. :

population many many many times larger than singapore, their elite sportsman & woman is larger than us, so the is market there, eg soccer, basketball etc.

here in singapore, what market r we talking about? maybe only 1, our S-League? how many player can do it full time?

govt knows that, but since there has always been a calling for better system to groom sportsman & woman, they hear u, so come the sport school, much like our speaker corner and casino, but like everthing, there is a limit, eg $100 to enter casino (policy to deter locals to dev. problem gambling).

don't talk abt population, some country like NZ only 4m population but they still have many talents that can break world record, the sports man need support not population. We are asian, we can't compete on physical, but how about skill base sports? in our country when we said we wanna play this or that games, our parents will said, ah boy ah, go study hard, 将来才可以出人头地. Do't like who who w how... sad lor... then the govt will tel you we only give scholarship for ppl with 1234 As, this country don't have sports scholarship la

I tot they just give out some sports scholarship for sports school ableit for show only. I personally know of 2 guys who stop study for 1 year and 2 years. One of them is a SEA games gold medalist but now vanish in thin air, eventually has to find his own way to oversea uni. It is sad and pathetic. Sports career is not a career path here, just like art.

But many parents will still want their children to take up certain sports like - swimming, in order to have DSA to better school. Just drop by swimming clubs like CSC, SwimFast etc, you will have tons of advise from parents how to go about for DSA.

That is the problem here, lack of support from Gov. for sportsman cause parents who want to support their children's dream to go overseas and in the end emigrate and represent other country. Really sad :(

Well, we're all selfish guys :embrass:

Those who served army will know. Any volunteers? We need to be picked to do work. Not sure about the gals though

There were times when we would all happily volunteer only when there's camaraderie. Do we have it Singaporeans?

How do you think China filled all the seats during Olympics? It's probably the same everywhere & especially in developed countries where we're more concerned with making more money hence the unhappiness with splurging that money. Move on people. Deal's sealed & review it constructively later.

Meanwhile, let's hope no more blunders from the F&B department. Best wishes to the boys & gals to get well soon.

I don't really think YOG has direct $$ benefits to most of us (maybe to tourism industry)...but more like a branding/marketing exercise for Singapore, which hopefully can bring benefits in the near future..I think zero o has brought up a few good points.

Just my take.

YOG is for us to better our chance in the bigger league.
It's for us to spot the talents of tomorrow rather than yesteryear.
Especially the foreign talents that we love n welcome.
Then we POACH them!

Wohoooo!
Olympic Gold here we come!
300,000,000.00? Sup sup water :)

Agenda is plural Liao :)
Agendum is singular.

Instead of dumping those money spent on YOG, why not spent it on sports development? Using the same money to lure top coaches, supporting staff, infrastructure etc?

Spend on sport development, only the sport men/women benefit.. To many, it's a waste of money.

Spend on YOG, potentially, the whole economy benefit.. To some, it's a waste of money.

Don't spend even better

Or spend on better public transport that benefit the whole nation.

I have the impression that the pple in China were fighting to be volunteers.. so much so that they actually have to reject many.. The pple feel that it is very proud to be involved in a major event in their country.

Is there any articles on the internet that China pple complained of being forced to volunteer?
