Be thankful for the food and drinks you get. The poor construction workers that build our flats gets worst then this. If you volunteer, don't expect too much. If you volunteer, don't complain. If you expect to be treated as King and queen, don't volunteer.

I have met people whom I work in my venue that pay $3000 air ticket to come to Singapore, pay their own hotel to volunteer in Singapore. When I ask them about the food...their reply was.."Be thankful for food." They are not paid a single cents, took leave from their work and travel half the world to come and volunteer. That is a real volunteer.

Nope I don't think that should be the idea. I think that if you want to give food/money, then it better be decent. It's like how you shouldn't just give those buskers 5 cents just because they are taking up unnecessary space in your wallet, you're just insulting them. If you don't plan on providing decent food / have double standards and give great food to the athletes and crappy food to the volunteers, then don't give the volunteers anything at all, and tell them beforehand to bring their own money for food. I'd much rather be a volunteer and expect nothing at all than volunteer and be treated like dung.

And we should not compare ourselves with foreign construction workers. We are citizens of a first world country, you can't say that since people in Africa don't even have half as much as the portion of the food to eat, we should be happy we have food. Don't compare apples to oranges. I hate people who say that we should think of the starving people in Africa when we waste food. Perhaps they should start donating some food to the Africans first. The fact that they are eating food means that they are depriving the Africans of food. They could have donated the food to the Africans, but they chose to have it for themselves. Are they not selfish then?

Problem is, they got a 5.5 million contract and yet they're still giving this sort of pathetic food. 5.5 million. Surely they could have given btr stuff than this?

Surely, we need to give thanks for everything. But this is not the point. The food is being paid for - 5.5 million DOLLARS ( TAX PAYER MONEY), they should reveal the cost of the package lunch for volunteer then we can make a judgement of the food being served. If it is 50 cent per box then they are super generous, I will go down to their kitchen to wash the floor for free during this YOG. If 1.50 still ok but they wash their own floor. But if $5 then they are shameless.

The construction workers are working in a first world country, why the double standards? Singapore workers should get better food/treatment then foreign workers who work side by side with us?

If can't accept the treatment.....best don't volunteer. End of the day is when you volunteer, do not expect anything. You are there to serve to give and not to take. Be thankful if something is given to you. That is a bonus. BTW, they did not force the volunteer to eat those food. $5.5 million is a lot of money? Have you consider how many people are they providing for? Our government not stupid, you think they will over pay their vendors? May be you have not worked for government agency before.

Okay they are providing food for 20days (excluding venue validation exercise). Say 40,000 are eating each day. That will be 800,000 people x 3 meals = 2.4mil meals.

5.5/2.4 = $2.30 per meal. That is excluding the people that they employ to work from 6:30am to 8pm each day.

Is that a lot of money? May be one of you who are not happy should go do this job.

some might not have the priviledge to say no.

:thumbsup:I used to get 'volunteered' all the time in my cca...

And 5.5 million was given to them to provide proper food to everyone. If they couldn't do it with 5.5 million, thet shouldn't have put it a 5.5 million bid in the first place...

As qwerty628 stated - they should not bid for it. if They are in this business they should know the cost. Unless they are no other caterer in Singapore that is stupid enough to bid for it - then they are "VOLUNTEERED" to cook.

I haven't been following the news. These numbers, 3 meals for 40 000, are they hypothetical or official?

Your "not happy should do this job", "this job" refers to those volunteers or the caterer?

they bid so low not the volunteers problem........ the volunteers deserves better.

the systems should be scrapped...... try bid in the systems......

Absolutely agree. I encourage all volunteers to drop out if they feel they are not treated right. All the crap talk about not getting your testimonials/cca points are rubbish. After you finished your tertiary education your employer don't care about any of those. Even when applying for scholarships those are secondary.

Our government not stupid, you think they will over pay their vendors? May be you have not worked for government agency before.

Those of us who are complaining here.

about 20,000

This is excluding games official, full time workforce and foreign workers/security/army and etc. If you are working at the venue you realised that there are much more people involved then the volunteers stated. Students under CIP are not counted in the 20000.

its not about comparing.. hais.. ok, nevermind, there will always be two camps to these kinda issues..

whatever it is, there have been improvements made and they will hopefully provide a more satisfying lunch to the poor "volunteers"... no doubt the officials and the higher up people have nicer food.. so no need worry about them..

my fren "volunteering" for the torch relay the last few days said after the complains they had an improvement in food..

so good la

I beleive that the official and full time have different food of which I don't care.

BTW for S$2.20 I can get decent mixed rice in Punggol. :) coffee shop of which they do not enjoy the economies of scale of SFI.

My assumption is that SFI is being 'volunteer' to be the caterer, hence they have the full armour of the garment as protection.

The topic is not about 'if you wanna be a volunteer don't complain' but it is about SFI and the person from YOG comittee who agreed with the menu for volunteer. SFI should come upfront to reveal the cost for each meal. Or YOG committee should tell the volunteer to bring their own food or eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.

Enough for this topic.

don't you think that this should not be the case. If no one brought this out they will be happily jetting round the globe to play golf.

Everyone eats the same within the same venue, regardless of who you are.

So based on what you say, adding these people we have 40 000... but I wonder, all of them stay full time at the venue? Else how come breakfast, lunch and dinner ( 3 x 40 000) must be catered?
