Yishun has beautiful sky too!

Hi JT,

good try but need to boost up the contrast for MONO....

mayhap you should try using different color filter during MONO conversion, as in Blue Filter to boost up the highlights and midtones.....and using Curve to bring out the shadows....

besides that, a little step forward to exclude the overgrown on the right will be perfect...

cheers buddy and happy trying..

BR,
Thomas

Br Thomas, thanks so much for sharing and giving contructive advices on how to improve each time I hv difficulties. Will try the effect of diff filters. Thanks. :)

Hmmm....low view from bus stop along the road towards Nth Pt? Nice colors but not too sure abt the poster board.....seems to distract you away from the skies which you were trying to show...

Thanks dev2k8, I have one without the poster, was struggling btw the two, end up leaving it as my anchor. :)

Seems better but i'd rather move forward and cut out the tree too so that will totally show just the vast and colorful sky and the beautiful cloud formation too.....my personal view lah....others might see it differently!

Thanks, I used to enjoying the habit of shooting sky without any blocking, recently addicted more to include something in the foreground which will lead viewer to the interesting background. I find that make the pic more interesting. Still learning how to do it properly.

sorry bro, i read your pm a while back, but forgot about it.

when going through to clear inbox then saw it.

this looks good for me. i am wishing you could have just sunk the leftmost boat because that extreme distortion is quite unpleasant, just the 5 boats in the middle would be nice.

i am not so familiar with layer masks, what i do is work with layers, but the result seems to be correct, i.e. screen layer on foreground to brighten it up, multiply layer on sky (background) to darken it slightly.. or something to that effect. in any case, the end result looks good for me, so whatever works for you and gives you a nice end result. :)

this looks like a dull day, maybe try a slightly better (not too good here, something too colorful might spoil the mood here) day to shoot this composition again. in the meantime, you might consider using selective layers to just add saturation to the sky (above the horizon here).. just a slight 5-10 saturation in photoshop cs2 (later versions might vary in terms of strength) should be able to do the trick for me.

you might also consider liquification to handle the vertical distortion somewhat, if you look at the right side of the picture, your reflection isn't matching top to bottom.. :)

i don't really like #26, that oof thing on the right is really weird and distracting. maybe you can try something similar with only 2 jetties if you are limited by the area.

for #27, i really dislike the composition. really not a fan of these advertisement boards in singapore, and somehow as others have pointed out, it really distracts from that gorgeous sky (which is a wee bit oversaturated in my book).. the problem here is, you have two focal points, the sky with the lamppost, and that board. your eyes are getting "pulled apart" literally by the opposing elements which do not synergise, but just compete with each other way too much.

for #28, not really a fan of tree silhouettes, mainly because they just look like masses of black, although i admit they can work. here, i am not sure if gnd was used, but the tarnsition from slight detail to absolute blackness is very jarring, for the tree trunk.

#29 is a very messy picture, with unintuitive stray light. for me, i would not try this location for sunset timing at all, looks very challenging because of the amount of things around the place.

Bro WK, I am the one shd feel sorry for taking up so much of ur time, thanks so much for ur guidance, been trying very hard to make my pics less artificial, was glad at least now with ur method it works better, still need sometimes to master it. :)

Ya agreed, it is a messy messy place for sunset, I was considering for very long on how to shoot Northpoint Shopping Centre (the icon of Yishun) with beautiful skies. This series seems to be incomplete without the inclusion of Northpoint and the skies above her. Find it boring to just shoot the buiding itself, so decided to include bit of surronding/natural elements in the frame and of course with the sky. :)

The tilt works for me, although I'll love it more with higher contrast. Perhaps some more dodging and burning? Great effort nonetheless :)

Thanks. orangedial. Ya, I think dodging and burning will definitely help, but I am an idiot on dodge and burn function, still experimenting on the tool. :)

Thanks for advices. try dodge and burn. put original side by side for comparison. :)
