the Kiwi lens adapter has an aperture slider but without any f-stop markings, so i do have some degree of control.

Yeah, I got similar adapters for Canon EF and one for Contax N lenses. The aperture dial is numbered 1 to 6. Must do some estimate to control the wideness of the aperture.

for me it's just a temporary measure to shoot wider than the 18mm that i have. no point to spend money on the 14mm while i wait for the 10-20.
