hi'all,

just a quick check before I commit in a new system (x-mount).

I took some sample shots with the demo unit @ CP. Had both jpeg and RAW file with me... the jpegs look a bit soft under 100% magnification whereas the RAW files (procesed with RRP) are soft too.

My questions:
1. I thought without the AA filter the OOC jpeg or RAW should retain pretty high level of sharpness? Or this is just my false assumption?
2. I downloaded some full-rez samples from DPreview and other review sites... shot at low ISO and small aperture the details on the x-pro1 is not fantastic... looks less sharp compare to 5D Mark II.

Has anyone compared the x-pro1 with their DSLRs? What is your finding?

p/s: forget about EM-5... I dislike its output... looks very similar to my G11.

I have a few systems i am using at the same time, a seriously bad habit I truly want to kick....among them is the 5D mk2 and xpro1. Before I go further, a little disclaimer...all comments from me to this post are personal observations and in no way a technical comparison. I can't pull out tech graphs or pics to proof. If that's not good enuf, pls ignore my comments.

Xpro1 is sharp with the x lens and if you can focus manually well, an leica M mount lens really makes good use of the sensor too. What attracts me to the Fiji sensor is the color it produce in addition to the crispness of the image. Lightroom can't read the raw images yet so I can't make comparison to it to 5D mk2.

5D mkii's raw files is very robust, can withstand a good amount of tweaking in Lightroom. I personally find that the sharpness of the images from 5d mk2 depends a lot on the Lens used. Overall I find the image of xpro and even x100 sharper under normal use. Color wise I prefer xpro1 too. Of course 5d mkii is a lot more flexible in the kind of photography one pursues. Xpro 1 cannot replace this big advantage of 5d mk2...e.g. Sports and fast moving subjects.

Of course M9 is very sharp and the raw files are really good and colors are great...but you need nail the focus....if not its useless no matter how good is it. Also, High ISO not good. Can't really do macro.

So as you can see, there's no perfect cam system....I am starting to think its a big conspiracy among all the cam company to keep us from buying into diff systems. :)

As a 5Dmk2 + X100 + X-Pro1 user, 5Dmk2 is definately the worst of the three in terms of ISO and sharpness.

5Dmk2 wins in terms of handling, speed and AF but not to the extend of using for sports.

After i bought my x100, i play with the x100 90% of the time, leaving 5dmk2 in dry cab.

After i bought the x-pro1, i play with x-pro1 90% of the time, leaving the rest in dry cab.

once a while i bring my 5dmk2 out to shoot landscape.

Except for focusing speed, the xp1 beats my C 60D by miles.
Esp at producing usable high ISO (3200 and above) files.

thanks mate, really appreciate your reply. :) I agree that for interchangeable lens system (be it DSLR or mirrorless) the IQ is all about the lens. I'm using a Canon 1D body with a handful of L glass... comparing my X-Pro1 test shots with my EOS the X-Pro1 photos have "mushy" details... e.g. on my Canon I can identify trees and leaves in the background but not on the X-Pro1... the X-Pro1 shows a patterned patch of green. Lens tested was the 35mm f/1.4 on the X-Pro @ f/8.

As a 5Dmk2 + X100 + X-Pro1 user, 5Dmk2 is definately the worst of the three in terms of ISO and sharpness.
may I know which EF lens you used to compare the X-Pro1 with? I made some comparison on the X-Pro1 + 35 f/1.4 vs my 1D + 50 f/1.2 @ f/5.6... the output from X-Pro seems to be less "crisp" compared to the Canon. Forgot to check what is the default sharpening on the X-Pro though.

Still, I would prefer to have a rough gauge on how the X-Pro1 + 18/35/60 vs Canon's equivalent, if possible. Perhaps the XF 35 matches the IQ of EF 50mm f/1.8 but not the L?

Nice :) What about the digital artifacts/ RAW headroom on the X-Pro?

Contrast seems to be very good with the X pro 1 and xf 35. comparing with the 5d3, i think the 5d3 still edges out easily. iso seems to cleaner than the 5d2 at iso 3200.

how does the x-pro + XF35 compare to 5D2 + 50 f/1.4 or even the 24-70L in terms of bokeh and sharpness?

it is difficult to compare like this .. bokeh on the xf 35 is definitely good. 50 f 1.4 is not exactly known for the bokeh, quite harsh in fact. i only have the xpro 1 for a day actually. i find contrast to be better than 50 1.4 and 24-70L. Cant comment on the sharpness.
but the af is really very slow on the x pro 1 coming from a 5D3.

haha sorry to ask you such question, my bad. I used to own the 50 f/1.4 and 24-70L thus your answer will give me a better visual on what I am expecting from the x-mount system.

No doubt that the x-pro's AF is very slow but personally I find it sufficient enough for me. I don't really need blazing fast AF although to be frank I was being pampered by my 1D3 :embrass:

My zelenpol case arrived yesterday. Very happy with e packagin n whatever that comes with.

Packaging in silver makes it very outstanding, and their strap mechanism is perfect! Wan to sell my A&A strap now haha

What i dont like:
- e alumunium on e bottom a bit sharp somehow... Maybe because its thin
- half case more like 1/4 case not half case like e rest of e model

Call me crazy but i stripped down the whole caseand wrap the aluminium part with black gaffer tape then glue back the leathers. Now the case is in full black and stealth. Will post pic when i have time.

I actually prefer zelenpol's design to the rest where there is a circle cut out for focus switch.

dun quitel ike gariz design also because the bottom metal part of the camera is exposed. machiam like the camera is sitting on the case. for zelenpol, the camera base is fully covered and the camera looks like hiding behind the case.

i also emailed gariz to customise their design based on my requirement but they turn me down so i had to resort to stripping the zelenpol. but the end result is perfect!

I've also ordered the same case and it's in the process of being shipped.

I find the white a bit too striking as well.

What do you mean by wrapping the metal part with tape? Can show some pictures of the bottom plate from the top and bottom?

If it's too difficult, I'm actually considering using just black marker to colour the metal.

it will not work with marker. the colour will not be even and the marker ink is going to stain your shirt.

i tried to use gaffer tape and black tape to cover the aluminium but it does not stick well also due to the finishing of the aluminium. since gariz doesn't take in custom order, i strip the leather of the zelenpol case apart. the main piece, the bottom piece with the zelenpol word, and the top red piece.

the bottom piece is the easiest of all. the rest of the leather you need to tear it off the aluminium base. definately a heart pain process.

after that i start to wrap the aluminium base with black gaffer tape. because i already tear everything apart, i am able to do a very nice wrap on the alu base till the inside of the alu base so there will be no edges exposed which can peel away itself after some usage.

after all is done, then i slowly stick everything back.

black gaffer tape is better because it is somewhat a thick cloth tape and it eliminate the sharp edge feel as well as able to dampen some impact when place the camera too quickly on table. lastly, the texture also matches the leather quite well.

nice work, although it looks like real hard work to get it that way... i got my gariz orange and while im not bothered about the bottom plate, i find the leather a bit soft, wish it was stiffer... it oso don't hug the cam tightly around the front, there's a bit of gap between the leather and the body... the zelenpol looks better in that regard

here's another new entry into the xp1 half-case arena... comes with access to the battery door, bottom done in leather + strap + wrap-around cover which can accommodate the 35mm + hood:

zzyzx: thanks for the tip bro, ill try that!

Actually the metal looks quite good too even if it's not black.

I rearranged the strap to make it easier to release into a wrist strap

Any idea where to get the hotshoe cover and hard screen protector like gss type? Already asked some shops.
