Ok. I think we should move forward. Let's discuss how to tackle this situation if you were the photographer. Any events pro here can teach?
First scenerio, you were told well ahead that the client needs a group shot. What should we do or use to get a great shot?
Second scenerio, you were told last min that the client need a group shot. What can we do to get a good shot?
hmm, simply said, would a pro here wanna break their ricebowl to tell ppl how they achieve their accumulated experiences?
its all about what you pay and what you get.
you want ultra sharp pics with great details and print it up to A0 or you want a 4R pic?
like above have said, if its impromptu shot, impossible to get a decent shot just like that. its like going to a school graduation, you see all the lights are stationed properly, bench/chairs placed with markers on the sides to indicate the width... the camera doesn't move, the strobes are calibrated with light meter... every class come and go, consistency is maintained.
having said that, i've also seen before inexperienced event shooters shoot at events, althou i don't shoot these kinda stuff as i'm not a photographer, i do use my cam to shoot if it needs be, you have to understand the camera, the location and conditions.
for eg, i went once, a charity thingy, the FOC photographer was using a 400D with a wide angle probably 10-20 or 12-24, and wanna take group shot indoor. she thought using f5.6 or f8 would give her the focus sharpness of row 1-5, but she got no idea that she is using 1/4sec instead, and the group shot have handshake, on top of that, the focusing is off as well. on the final day, for the group shot, i told her to use my 1.5x crop camera with a 16mm fisheye, which becomes a 24mm slight distortion lens. and i told her to use f2.8, why? cos 1, it will shoot at about 1/30 or 1/60 with iso400/800, 2nd, no need to focus, cos a fisheye to infinity is about 3m, so in group shot of say a 100 ppl, everyone will not be within a 3m radius. and we all have the super sharp pics with everyone's smiling face inside. of course, the composition need working on...
