Would you buy a Canon 50mm f1.2?

It better be sharp wide open.. think it's performance from f1.2 to f1.6 is very crucial, otherwise there is not enuff reason why pple wanna get rid of the cheaper & lighter 50f1.4 to go for this.

i hope the 50/1.2L is sharp wide open; not just normal sharp, but the legendary kind of sharp... man, drooling already.

Tell me about it. :( Even a micro-shake can affect the sharpness of the image...making tripod a necessity but a huge PITA to set up...especially when shooting insects and invariably you will somehow frighten the bugger away when you try to set up your tripod.

Well IMO Canon shouldn't have put IS in 70-200mm f4L...its the macro lens that needs it more!

For IS to be useable at Macro... it have to be super sensitive. I dunnoe if Canon, or anyone for that matter, is able to come out with such sensitive IS without adverse feedback in the IS system. That's why Nikon 105 Macro VR also mention that the VR not really useable at 1:1.

nah I switch mine off and work with a bean bag support. VR is practically useless for 1:1. 1/2kg for a 50/1.2. How much extra light is that from the 50/1.4?

My original question loh... 1.4/1.8 > 1.2... would you go for it?

Another consideration is that like some said... 1.4 is soft wide open, so is 1.8.... One of the reason I go for a 1.4 is that I can still get sharp pics @ 1.8... so I suppose those who wants a sharp f/1.4 pic would go for the 1.2.

maybe, but I find my 1.4 sharp enough for me wide open. no matter what I still cant a reason to justify the price tag for that lens.

I also think the US$1.6k price tag is a major put-off for this lens..

Guess it's going to sell around S$2.8k(?) here

For that price, if dying for killer bokeh & speed, must well get the 85L.

For value hunter/starter, probably better off getting either combo:
1) 50f1.4 + 135f2L or
2) 35f1.4L + 85f1.8
with the same budget, probably with spare change somemore..

At that price, I think this lens will mainly appeal to those that hv collected the full set of prime trinity & still with some spare cash in pockets or those who love to shoot with 50mm & simply want the best in this focal length..

If its sharpness is as good as the 85L wide-open; and contrast & CA performance as good as the 135L wide open; & it's pricing closer to the 135L than the 85L, then I 'll probably think hard abt getting one. ;p

ok! I've been put off already :D until I can get another job :P

Yes. If I have lots of $$ to throw around:cry:

Lenses are not all bokeh, sharpness, contrast and colours. I believe Canon is updating some EF lenses for certain uses that require high resolving power, especially the current 16.7mp, or even 12mp 5D already calls for higher quality lenses. Obviously, these lenses are also priced out of the mass market, who have little use for it anyway.

question is... is this lens higher resolving?

That's why must hold the horses and see user feedback first. So far, the 851.2USM hasn't seem to be making waves.

hahaha... fang ma guo lai?

fang4 ma2 is let go of horses already. So hold the horses, dun rush in to buy, wait for user feedback.

For the unitiated on idioms and their applications.
