Guys, need to check if you have encounter this senerio. When you plug in a new device, like portable DVD burner. Win 7 is able to find and install the drivers by itself to make the device work, without the installation disk?

Yes like Windows Vista, Windows 7 will search the driver from within the installation folder, if it cannot find the driver it will go online to search for the driver. But this does not always work with every devices plugged in depending if M$ has the driver in their servers.

Agreed. Yesterday bought a new internal harddisk and plug into the mobile rack to use. To my surprise the system able to recognise the harddisk and allocated a disk number to it.

Now the funny thing is can't find the harddisk management in accessories folder.
I need to call a friend to help me in the setup.

after the RC coming to expiry, had a hard time trying to reinstall... (long story)
parallel virtual machine is very slow and many things dun work...
but i'm now on bootcamp again, using snow leopard mac os and windows xp sp1 (original with old acer laptop). and now i'm keen to buy the new windows 7.

i can ask the salesman but think it is better to find out first.

1. what's oem (full install)? i get dvd and serial, but no box or manuals, rite?

2. for upgrade version, do i need to install xp first everytime i need to install win7 (future installation/reinstallations)

3. is ultimate and pro an overkill compared to home premium. i do ms-office, web, video-viewing and photoshop. and i read below that netbook only supports win7 home premium (and the issue of whether i can just transfer the dvd contents to usb drive to install, or do i have to buy an external dvd-writer), so does it make sense to buy home premium oem (full install) since it is cheaper than upgrade version and can install from blank (no need xp already installed).

4. i may look at the price of challenger, and then look at the prices of the shops in SLS 4-5th floor to see those prices on the board. is there a better way u do to get cheaper prices? thanks for any advices.

5. and lastly, just to ask, even at bootcamp 3.1 at this moment, i can only dual boot and cannot boot three systems via boot camp (mac, xp, win7) rite? i know internet talks about a lot of complicated methods but they are beyond me. at the moment, i'm comfortable with bootcamp and if there is any way of using bootcamp for that, that will be great.

it seems that if i may possibly upgrade my mac or switch back to pc in years, oem version (which only install 1 machine + its component change) may cause me troubles in future. lit cost 359 to get the home premium non-upgrade non-oem version... maybe buy from amazon, and that may cause me about 250, i think, or alternatively, i buy the upgrade version from amazon (only thing is that i have to in future install xp first than upgrade to win7). but is there a likelihood that better machines (eg. in the next 5 years) are unable to install xp sp1 and then thus i cannot install win7 upgrade version?

I've tried win7 RC & loved it. My only concern is... there isn't any RAW converter from original company that supports Win7 64bit, or at least not ported to it yet. Totally not keen to use 3rd party converters ACR or LR or Aperture, etc.

I'm using Canon DPP ver 3.5 & Oly Studio ver 1 atm, dun think i'll see win7 support soon. Canon has an update to Vista but will it work on win7 64? Will i be able to install DPP onto win7 64bit then update to Vista 64 ver? Anyone tried? Thanks

Get the Window 7 pro and OEM version. It saves cost and upgrade.

I believe DPP for win 7 64bit exist. I just have the Canon software utilities updated in my Win 7 64 bit. Check the drivers and download in the canon web.

Thx, i'll try to install from the disc tom. Mine is for 40D using ver 3.5 & there doesn't seem to be any update that goes beyond Vista. But will check again soon, i'm not even sure if the disc can be installed in Win 7 64 to begin with. Oly Studio ver 1 sure dun have, need to check for Studio 2... but then i dun need ver 2 Sigh....

Win7 has been out for more than half year already. I want to know if it is worthwhile for me to upgrade from

1) XP pro to Win7
2) Vista Business to Win7
3) is 3GB of RAM reasonable for Win7

By "worthwhile" I mean will it be significantly faster over the original OS, faster to boot, faster to start apps like office suite, browser, etc. I don't care too much about the fancy animated effects, etc.

Will there be compatibility issues with printers, video drivers, sound, etc? Hoping not because my hardware are both 1 to 3 year old models.

you have to check with the manufacturer (website ) and see if they have any driver update for windows 7.

you can also download Windows 7 upgrade Advisor, install and run it. this utility from microsoft will scan your PC or laptop and check for compatibility issue.

Check out Lenovo's Windows 7 drivers. You could always use the BETA drivers from Lenovo but chances are Lenovo should have gotten all the required drivers ready by now since Windows 7 has been out for some time.

If its office application and web surfing usage only, then you're better off sticking with your existing OS unless you have copies of Windows 7 which you can use for 'em.

I'm on Vista but got the 2011 Win Live already. All the apps in it uses the ribbion style that the new Office has. Messenger don't use it but its kinda expanded to connect to social networking sites like facebook etc. Its a suit worth DL, its free!

For me, the more impressive thing is Microsoft now offers 25gb of online storage for photos and files. Online versions for MS Word/Excel etc. All for free!

Its very likely. win XP is no longer supported by MS even now. I think its safe to buy OEM version. You will only need to upgrade the motherboard every 3 or 5 years.. by then you should be using newer OS to maximize your use of newer hardware anyway.
