How about scratch? Ask to pay ==> too much, let it be ==> you don't feel ok.

lend to ppl u trust, u nevr know when your gear breaks down n u need to borrow theirs :)

Well, since i scrimped and save for months at end to get my gear.
i think would decline politely.

but hey, before i had my DSLR, my borrowed my uncle's E500 and he seemed
pretty nervous about lending it to me, though he did in the end.

and i think i know why now:P

I dun mind lending as long as it's not for a commercial purpose.

i hear you!

anyway i lent out my equipments to some of my friends already. i find it pretty alright as long as they don't lose any major parts of my cam or damage it badly.

Actually I also want to ask everybody about this..How would you say no to other lor..

Most of people I know are accquaintances..Not friend.but they still want to borrow my cam..The thing is they don't know how to use but complain why my cam is so heavy..(I think kaoz..then you don't borrow lor...) .I treat my cam as a precious gem so I myself handle very very careful..but hor..when I saw the way they handle their own PnS cam, I decided say no..but they nag until haiz...I have no problem to lend my cam to the one who knows how to use my cam, handle it careful..not the one doesnt know how to shoot then making noise..Then when I instructed them to use my cam they said I'm talkative..kaoz..my cam i bought myself, any problem I need to work on it..not them..then still dare to complain me..At least, I know about cam so I use it very careful..they don't know then better shut up..Should ask them go buy a slr cam first then borrow other..I think only the one have own cam then can appreciate others slr..

only borrow to close friend plus he know how to operate n taking care of my cam.

if i know he/she knows how to handle the stuff, yes i will =)

If you lend your camera to 'monkey', if scratch, you can't say anything but "#@$!*%&!"... . 'Monkey' does not even ask for permission... :bsmilie: .

NO relation if you want an answer.

Related if you think in another way is..if you lend something and someone scratch it.
Now, treat that monkeys who took a ride on my bike as the lender...can't expect anything from them.

You got it!
Yes, when I rode off I was cursing all the way! :complain: but LL only.

Happened to me once. Lend to my friend and come back some broken piece and missing parts. In the end, I throw my camera away. Can't leave it with me, it hurts to see it in this condition and I can't question my friend on this. Luckily it is just a point and shoot camera.
Question asked...friendship broken.

Same here, I don't mind lending to photography students or those I can trust the equipment with.

So how do you turn them down nicely without coming off as miserly?

i dont mind lending to friends who i can trust AND who know how to operate and appreciate the equipment. You can be my best friend, if you dont know how to use the thing i dont lend it.
If you make money from it then i would expect that you pay something for it.

How to turn down? i think there is nothing wrong with telling the truth, like "i am sorry but i think you dont know enough to operate the camera"

as long as they are friends, and know how to handle equipment , i have no issue letting people use my stuff.

That LL feeling I can understand, but that is borrowing without permission. But lending to someone is something we can control. By lending. it means that we are willing to accept the risk of misuse, intentional or unintentional. At least there is still a possibility of asking for some form of compensation from humans. but still that feeling is equally LL :sweatsm:

very true... most of my photographer friends have this mutual understanding of paying for repair if its broken. we support each other with our gear :)

If you’ve spent a tidy amount laying out your camera, lenses and mac set up, will you lend / rent it to your friends for commercial or school projects?

I suppose things like that get pretty tricky. If they borrow it for free, what happens if something happens to your gear?

On the other hand, if they rent it from you, wouldn’t that defeat the saying, “take up the job only when you have the capability/sources/gear to do it well?”

Wondering if anybody here has found himself this position.

Depends on what kind of friend and how responsible is he/she to me.
